BARBERS CHAIR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,588, dated December 8, 1891.

Be it known that I, ANTON J. RoLLERr, a
citizen of the United States of America, re-
'nected by the arm-rests that they will swing in unison from a vertical to anearly-horizontal position, and in which by the swinging of a single hand-lever the seat can be locked to be rigid with its base and the back and foot-- board can be locked on any inclining position; and with these objects in view my invention consists of the noveldevices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the chair with its back and foot-board adjusted to be in almost Fig. 2 is alongitudinal vertical section of the pivot portion of the chair; Fig. 3, a sectional plan View of the same on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a transverse Vertical section of the pivot portion, and Fig. 5 a rear elevation of the same.

A denotes the base of the chair, consisting of a central hub or, having secured four curved straddling legs b. ing the pivotal connections for the back C and the foot-board D, both again pivotally connected by the arm-rests E in a manner that a reclining movement of the back will swing the foot-board upward, and vice versa, and to the end of the foot-board D is connected the adjustable foot-cushion F.
Diametrically through box or chamber g of tubular stem f is bored a hole, which is screwtapped for engaging the screw-threaded portion of the shaft 1', having secured upon its end the lever j to be exterior of the chairseat at one side thereof, with its upper handle in easy reach for the barber, standing behind the chair, to grasp it with his right hand.
Upon the middle of this screw-threaded portion of shaft is rigidly mounted an eccentric K, to be inside the box or chamber g, vertically over the tube-of stem f, and into this tube is inserted a pin Z, that with its bottom end will rest upon the bottom of socket c,
while its top end will be in contact With eccentric K, so the entire weight of the chairseat and occupant can be supported on such pin Z and carried by the eccentric K, and that the barber by swinging the leverj in a forward direction will turn the eccentric K to lift the seat, and by swinging the lever j in a rearward direction the seat will be lowered again, the entire vertical movement being very limited.
In the shallow socket inside of rim 6, upon flange d of socket-casting c, is snugly fitted a ring m, so as to turn therein easily. This ring m is split at one side to provide a radial slot a, while diametrically opposite the slotn the ring m has inside a notch 0, that will enable it to be sprung apart and to contract again as soon as released, and against the rear side of the box or chamber g of tubular stem f is rigidly secured by screws a wedge 19, which enters slot 11 of ring 771 in a manner that by lowering the seat, by swinging the le verj rearward, the wedge 19 will expand the ring m against the inner peripheral face of rim e to afford by frictional contact a rigid hole therein, and that by lifting the seat, by swinging the lever j forward, the wedge will be raised sufficiently to allow the ring m to contract again and then to turn loosely With the seat. This device, as will be readily seen,
operates like a brake controlled by the vertical movement of the chair-seat on its base. Under foot-board D is secured a rigid arm q, having pivotally connected to its end one end of a bar longitudinally slotted from itsopposite end to near its middle, and this slotted portion is placed over the screwthreaded projecting end of shaft ito slide thereon, and exteriorly of this slotted bar '2' is secured upon the screw'threaded end of shaft 1' a nut s and a jamb-nut i with a washer u intermediate of bar 7" and .nut .9. Upon rotating shaft t', by swinging leverj, the said shaft 1 must laterally follow its screwthread in a manner that with the swinging of such lever in a rearward direction the washer to will be moved against bar r, clamping the same against box or chamber g and holding it rigidly, while by swinging lever j forward the bar 0 will be released again, the n uts s and t enabling a very accurate adjustment for such clamping device. It will be understood that when not clamped by the above device the bar 0' is free to slide on the end of shaftql while swinging the back and foot-rest, but when clamped said baro-will form a rigid brace for holding the back and foot-rest in any desired position relative to the seat.
From the above it will be readily seen that with the lever j swung to its forward position the seat will easily turn upon its pivot by swinging the lever j to its vertical position, the chair-seat will be held from turning by the expansion of ring m, caused by the gravity of the chair-seat forcing the wedge 17 into slot at of such ring, and with swinging the leverj to its rearward position the back 0 and foot-board D will be locked and rigidly held on their vertical or any inclining positions that may be desirable without releasing the seat for a turning movement on its base. It will also be readily noticed that the occupant of the chair, without the assistance of the barber, can adjust the position of the parts by the motion of his body, and can then handle the lever j for locking the parts to be sustained in such relative positions.
hat I claim is-- 1. A chair comprising a base, which rests at all times upon the floor or other support and at all times supports the seat independently of any other means of support, a socket-piece mounted upon said base, a vertically-movable seat having a downwardly-projecting hollow stem located within and supported upon said socket-piece, a pin located within and supported upon said socket-piece, an eccentric carried by and connected with said seat and acting upon said pin for raising and lowering the seat, and devices for operating said eccentric, substantially as shown and described.
2. A chair comprising a base, a verticallyinovable seat having a pivotal connection therewith, and a brake device for preventing the rotation of the seat, embracing two members, one of said members being carried by the seat and the other member being carried by the base, and said members being located to rigidly engage each other when the seat is at the lower limit of its movement and to disengaged from each other when the seat 1s elevated, substantially as shown and described.
3. A chair comprising a base, a verticallymovable seat having a pivotal connection with said base, a split ring located within a socket on said base, and a wedge carried by said seat and engaging said split ring.
4. A chair comprising a base, a verticallyi'novable seat having a pivotal connection with said base, a friction-ring located within a socket on said base and having separated end portions, and awedge carried by said seat and engaging the separated end portions of said friction-ring.
A chair comprising a base, a verticallymovable seat having a pivotal connection therewith, devices for raising and lowering said seat, and a movable foot-board connected with and controlled by said devices for raising and lowering said seat.
6. A chair comprising a base, a verticallyinovable seat having a pivotal connection therewith, devices for raising and lowering said seat, and a movable foot-board adj ustably connected with said devices for raising and lowering said seat.
7. A chair comprising a base, a verticallymovable seat having a pivotal connection therewith, devices for raising and lowering said seat, and a movable foot-board having a sliding connection with said devices for raising and lowering the seat.
8. A chair comprising a base, a verticallymovable seat pivotally supported thereon, an eccentric carriedby said seat and acting upon said base, a shaft for operating said eccentric, and a movable foot-board adjustably connected with said shaft.
9. A chair comprising a base, a verticallymovable seat pivotally supported thereon, an eccentric carried by said seat and acting upon said base, a shaft for operating said eccentric, having screw threaded connection with said seat, a movable foot-board, and a bar connected with said foot-board and having a sliding connection with said shaft and located between the seat and an abutment on said shaft.
10. A chair comprising a base, a seat having a stem located within a socket in said base, an eccentric carried by said stem and acting upon said base, a shaft for operating said eccentric, having a screw-threaded connection with said stem, a movable foot-board, and a bar having a sliding connection with said shaft, said bar being located between an abutment on said shaft and the said stem and being pivotally connected with said foot-board.
11. A chair comprising a base, a seat having a stem located within a socket in said base, an eccentric carried by said stem and acting upon said base, a shaft for operating said eccentric, having a screw-threaded connection seat, side rails pivoted to said foot-board, and a chair-back pivoted to said seat and to the said side rails.
