CLEANING ROD FOR FIRE ARMS.
No. 464,099. Patented Dec. 1, 1891'.

UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED BITTER JURNITSCHEK V ON WVEHRSTEDT, OF VIENNA, AUSTRIA HUNGARY.
CLEANING-ROD FOR FIRE-ARMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 464,099, dated December 1, 1891. Application filed June 30, 1891. $erial N0. 398,09 7. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, DR. ALFRED BITTER J URNITSOHEK VoN WEHRsTEnT, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, residing at Vienna, in the Province of Lower Austria, in the Empire of Austria-IEIungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Cleaning-Rods for Breech-Loading Guns and other Hand Fire-Arms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The invention relates to cleaning-rods for breech-loading and other hand flee-arms; and it consists, essentially, in making the rod of two parts, one of said parts being adapted to telescope into the other for the purpose of shortening the same and thereby readily securing it in a suitable bearing in the gunstock, so as not to materially project beyond the fore end of the stock.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of so much of a hand fire-arm and cleaning-rod as will be necessary to illustrate my invention. Fig. 2 is a v similar view of a portion of the cleaning-rod,
showing the two sections connected for use; and Fig. 3 is aright-hand end view'of Fig. 1.
B indicates the gun-stock; (Z', the forward strap that serves to secure the barrel B to said stock, which latter is provided with a suitable longitudinal socket or bearing for the reception of the cleaning-rod O A, the strap cl being provided with an exteriorlythreaded tubular projection or bearing d in register with the rod-socket.
The cleaning-rod is constructed of two sections 0 A, the section A being a solid rod provided with the cleaning head or worm a, while the section Ois tubularand terminates in an enlarged interiorly-threaded head 0', adapted to screw upon the tubular projection d of the strap d, said head being also provided with a milled flange 0. The oppo site end of the tubular section 0 of the rod is alsb sorew-threaded internally for the connection of one end of the solid-rod section A, which end is correspondingly screw-threaded, as shown'at a, said end being further prolll-- tion 0 screwed to the tubular bearing orpro-.
jection (Z of the forward strap cl, thereby securely connecting the rod 0 A to the gun.
It will be seen that considerable space is economized by constructing the cleaning-rod as described, a comparatively great portion thereof being contained in the section 0, so that-but a limited portion of the rod will project beyond the forward end of the gunstock. On the other hand, by providing the section 0 with the enlarged milled head a firm hand-hold is provided in the use of the rod.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination, with a hand fire-arm,
whose stock is provided with a longitudinal bearing or socket, and whose forward strap has a tubular externally-threaded bearing in register with the socket, of a cleaning-rod composed of two sections adapted to telescope one into the other, the tubular section of the rod having an internally screw-threaded enlarged. head at one end adapted to be screwed upon the externally-threaded bearing 1of the forward strap, for the purpose set ort 1.
2. A cleaning-rod for hand fire-arms, composed of the sections A and C, said section A being a solid rod externally screw-threaded at one end, and said section 0 being tubular, screw-threaded internally at one end, and having at its opposite end an enlarged internally-screw-threaded head 0', provided with a milled flange 0, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED BITTER JURNITSOHEK VON WEIIRSTEDT. Witnesses: W. B. MURPHY,
