Be it known that I, HENRY GooDAoRE, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Lexington, in the county of Fayette and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Fastener for Envelopes, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention has relation to fasteners for envelopes, the objects in view being to provide a cheaply-constructed, simple, vand efficient device for securing the flap of an envelope the body of the same, and that in a manner whereby an accidental unfastening is avoided, and yet will permit of an unfastening of the same when desired.
With the above objects in view the invention consists in certain features of construction hereinafter specified, and particularly pointed out in the claims.`
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of an envelope, the ilap opened, and provided with a fastener constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the flap closed and fastened. Fig. 3 is a detail in perspective of the fastener. Fig. it is a transverse section.

In constructing my fastenerIform the same in two sections formed of light sheet metal, and which I will for the purpose of convenience designate as the stationary section 1 and the swiveled or locking section 2. The stationary section 1 consists of a securingplate 3, provided with spurs 4, adapted to be introduced through the flap 5 of the envelope and bent upon themselves to form a means of securing the plate to said flap. The section is extended beyond the securing-plate and provided with a central opening 6 of circular shape, leading to which is a narrow radiating slot or neck 7. The swiveled or locking section consists of a circular head 8, hav ing a central circular perforation 9, the edge of which is provided with a series of notches or slits and bent down through the opening U of the section 1 and under the edges of said ally connected or the locking-section swiveled upon the stationary section. The section 2 has a portion of its stock removed,
forming a narrow neck or opening 11, which leads tothe central opening in the section and corresponds in width with the neck or slot formed in the section 1. From the circular head of thesection 2 there extends an operating handle or lever 12, whereby the section 2 may be moved upon the section 1. This completes the construction, with the exception of a headed stud `13, secured to the body of the envelope opposite a point thereon at which the openings in the sections will come when the iiap is closed.
By operating the swiveled section until the narrow neck or slot in its head registers with that of the section 1 the Hap may be closed and the neck of the stud passed through the necks or slots of the fastener. Vhen this has been accomplished, a slight rotation of the swiveled or locking section throws the necks or slots of said sections out of alignment, and a separation of the fastener from the stud is impossible.
From the above description it will be apparent lthat I have provided an extremely simple, cheap, and durable fastener that may be used over and over again Without impairing its effectiveness, and is designed to be applied to other articles than envelopes, such as paper boxes, gloves, tbc.
It will loe obvious that the fastener may be formed of other light material, such as guttapercha, zylonite, card-board, tbc. It will also be seen that the spurs 4 may be omitted and the plate 3 simply pasted or otherwise secured to the envelope.
I may provide the lever 12 with a V-shaped depression 13a, laterally disposed, the angle portion of the depression being the deepest end, so that the lever after being locked and partially rotated can only be unfastened or disconnected by rotating the lever in the same or a continuous direction.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. The envelope having the stud extending from the same and the flap and the hereindescribed fastener, the same comprising two sections, the stationary section consisting of a plate having spurs passed through and bent upon the flap and extended to form a head having a circular opening and anarrow slot IOO leadingr to the opening, and the locking-section consisting of a circulai` head having a concentric opening, the edges of which pass through the opening of the stationary seetion and are bent under the same and further provided with a lateral handle having a slot adapted to be thrown into alignment with the slot of the stationary section, substantially as specified.
