Description

. G H. SLOCOM.
TACK FULLER.
Patented Nov. 24, 1891.
PETERS o0 pump-mum, msmuurou n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
CAROLINE I-I. SLOOOM, OF MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN.
TACK-PULLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,817,dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed September 29,1890- $erial No. 366,558. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CAROLINE H. SLoooM, a citizen of the United States, and aresident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of \Visconsimhave invented certain new and usefullmprovements in'lacka side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a crosssection of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. The object of my invent-ion is to produce a simple, inexpensive, and durable form of tack-puller which shall afford a fulcrum-point upon which the device shall operate as a lever.
In the said drawings, A designates the handle, and B the head, of a tack-hammer.
O designates the usual claw, the stem 0 of which is shown as inserted longitudinally into the butt-end of the handle in theusual manner.
In accordance with my invention I provide a ferrule d, which is of brass, iron, steel, or other similarlystrong material, and which is either circular in cross-section, as shown in the drawings, or polygonal, as preferred. Upon one side of this ferrule is formed a projection D, which is preferably integral with the ferrule, and which, when the device is in position with the ferrule embracing the buttend of the handle, extends at right angles to the claw O and coincident with the under side of the latter. It'is. further to be underthe handle.
stood that the projection D extends preferably at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the head, although this precise relative position of the head and projection D is not essential to the spirit of my invention.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that when the claw is properly inserted beneath the head of a tack or nail the projection D rests upon the floor or an adjacent structure, and thus serves as a fulcrum for This structure avoidsthe vexatious delays which result from hunting for a stick or block or other extraneous objectas a fulcrum, and also prevents the twisting and dislocation of the claw, heretofore unavoidable in the use of tack-pullers of this class. It is obvious that the head may,if desired, be omitted, the handle and claw constituting, with the ferrule and its fulcrum, a complete appliance. It will also be seen that by constructing the ferrule as above described,
and applying it to a handle in the manner specified, should at any time the handle become broken the ferrule could very readily be taken' off and placed upon a new handle.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
An improved tack-puller comprising a handle, a claw having its shank driven in one end of the handle longitudinally of the latter, a ferrule binding the claw end of said handle, and an integral fulcrum-lug projecting laterally from the ferrule, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee,in the countyof Milwaukee and State of WVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
CAROLINE H. SLOOOM.
