N0. .463 ,9 67.- Patented Nov. 10, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN H. MILLER, OF NEWARK, OHIO.
BAKING-OVEN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,067, dated. November 10, 1891..
Application filed November 10, 1890. Serial No 370,987. (No model.)
a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Baking-Ovens; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a vertical section. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 y of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a section on line 2 z of Fig. 2.
The invention relates to improvements in bake-ovens; and it consists in the construction and arrangement hereinafter set forth.
The invention particularly relates to improvements on the oven shown and described by me in Patent No. 410,913, dated September 10, 1889.
In the accompanying drawings, A A represent the outer brick-work or walls of the furnace and oven; 1) b, the inner metal walls of the oven proper or baking-chamber; O C, the heat and smoke chambers between said outer and inner Walls. F is the fire-pot, F the grate, and G the ash-pit.
a a are small doors leading into the oven, said doors being located atthe front, and bb' are the doors to the fire-pot and ash-pit, which are at the side.
0 c are air'pipes for conducting air into the fire-pot, and are provided with the air openings or perforations c for that purpose.
cl is the smoke-fine, which is located over the fire-pot.
The inner walls (7 b, forming the baking chamber or oven proper, are anchored in the brick walls at the corners, and the top and bottom are supported by the angle-bars e.
H is a slat or frame dividing the oven into upper and lower compartments arid forming a support for an upper tier of baking-vessels.
I is the lower hearth of the oven, and may be of soapstone, fire-brick, metal, or any suit able material.
I is a second hearth, which is supported on the hearth I by the legs or supports f. The oven may be used, if desired, without this hearth I. a
The top K of the oven is of soapstone, firebrick, or metal, and is extended over shutting off the heat and smoke chamber C O at the side or end over the fire-pot, thus preventing the smoke and heat from passing direct-1y up that side of the oven and into the flue and cansing it instead to pass under the oven along its sides and over the top before it can escape through the flue or chimney, thereby heating all portions of the oven.
The top of the smoke-chamber C O is provided with a sand filling g for the purpose of retaining the heat.
These ovens, if desired, may be made and used in series.
Having described the invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an oven, the combination, with the fire-pot and the pipes for conducting air thereto, of the oven proper, located above said firepot and partly thereover, said oven comprising the outer walls, the inner metallic Walls anchored to said outer walls at the corners and supported at the top and bottom by an glebars, the heat and smoke chamber between said walls, the inner top wall extending over and shutting off said chamber at the side or end between the fire-pot and the flue, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The bake-oven having between its outer and inner walls the heat and smoke chamber, the inner top wall of the oven being extended to shut off the said chamber at the side or end between the fire and the fine, whereby the heat and smoke are caused to pass along all sides of the oven proper, the upper portion of the said chamber having a sand filling to retain the heat, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. MILLER. Witnesses:
WM. A. GHANNELL, CHAS. H. FOLLETT.
