To all whom t may concern.-

Be it known that we, CHARLES XV. BROWN, a resident of Columbus, Franklin county, Ohio, and GEORGE W. SHORT, a resident of Cleveland, Cuyahoga county, Ohio, both citizens of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Election Tally-Sheet Books, of which the following is a specification.

Our invention relates to an election tallysheet book for the use of officers of electionJ The object of ourinvention is to provide an election tally-sheet book of convenient form, in which the tally of all votes cast for each candidate on each ticket may be easily and quickly set down with the minimum chance of error as said votes are taken from the ballot-box and counted; in which the total number. of votes tallied for each candidate may be quickly computed and the totals set down at points which clearly indicate the candidate for which said total number of votes was cast, and upon which the officers of election may'certify to the correctness of the tally in such a manner that no page of the entire book may be substituted for the original page without mutilating said certificate.

To these ends our invention consists in a tally-sheet book having the characteristics hereinafter explained, and pointed out definitely in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of the book when open. Fig. 2 is a plan View of that side of the center leaf whiclndoes not show in Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a view of the front of theibook, and Fig. 4 is a view of the back of the book when closed.

The book is composed of three leaves, the center leaf C being of the size of the book when closed. The two outside leaves A A and B B are double the size of the leaf C, and when the book is closed the part A is folded down onto the partAand the partBis folded down onto the part B', the folds or creases being vertical and at the middle point of said leaves, respectively. In the best construction two pieces of paper are employed, the leaf C being an integral part of either the leaves A A or the leaves B B', and the two pieces are secured together at the middle of the bookthat is, at the inner edge of the leaf C. The

pages A A and the left-hand page of sheet C constitute a tally-sheet for recording the tally of votes cast for the candidate on two tickets in the field, while the right-hand page of leaf C and the pages B B constitute a tally-sheet for recording the votes cast for the candidates upon the other tickets.

The vertical ruling on page A and the righthand page of sheet C is the same. The vertical ruling on the left-hand page of sheet C and page B are the same; so, also, is the vertical ruling on pages A and B. The vertical spaces on the two sheets formed by similar vertical ruling are intended for the same purpose. In the left -hand space are the names of the officers; in the next column the names of the candidates. At the right hand are columns for the totals in figures and in words. The intermediate spaces are used for the tally, some convenient number of votes being tallied in each vertical column, usually ve. It is evident that both tally-sheets are accessible for marking the tally by merely turning backward or forward the sheet C.

The sheets are divided into horizontal spaces, and each space is devoted to the record of votes cast for the candidate on one of the several tickets voted for. The total number of horizontal divisions on both sheets is arbitrary, but should be suiflcient to record in separate divisions the votes for candidates on all the several tickets voted. XVe show two horizontal divisions on one tally-sheet and three on the other; but, as above stated, this is arbitrary. Each of the horizontal divisions on each tally-sheet is diiferently tinted. This cannot be shown in the drawings; but the horizontal division on one tally-sheet (marked l) is made in one tint; that marked 2 in another tint. The division on the other sheet marked 3 is of one tint, which may be the same as the tint in divisions l or 2. The division marked 4 is of a diiferent tint. Division 5 is of a third tint. The tints may be made by water-lining, printing, ruling, or in any other manner. This difference in tintis of great service to the tally-keeper, since it aids him inrnoving without hesitation or error to the proper horizontal division in which he will find the name of a candidate on any given ticket. Moreover, increasing the num- IOO ber of tints employed decreases the likelihood of any successful alteration ot the tally.

The cert-icate of the officers of election runs across the top of pages A A and the left-hand page of sheet C, and the continuation of said certificate and the spaces for the signature are at the bottom of the other page ot' sheet O and pages B B. Itis therefore impossible to substitute a sheet for either of the original sheets without mutilating the certiiicate. When the tally is completed and certified to, the book may be closed and then folded with two folds (at the points indicated by the dotted lines ot Fig. 4) into convenient form for tiling.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. In an election-book, the two leaves A A and B B', each twice the size of the closed book, combined with the intermediate leaf O of the size of the book, the pages of said leaves being divided by vertical lines, substantially as described, whereby the left-hand page of sheet O and the pages A A form one tallysheet and the right-hand page of sheet O and the pages B B another similar tally-sheet, substantially as an d for the purpose specified.

In an -election-book, a ruled sheet, as B B', twice the size, approximately, of the closed book, folded'vertically at or near its middle, combined with a ruled sheet, as A A O, three times the size of the closed book, folded vertically into three substantially equal parts, said sheets being secured together, as described, whereby one-third of the larger sheet forms with the other two-thirds thereof one tally-sheet and with the smaller sheet another tally-sheet, substantially as and for the purpose specied.

3. In an election book composed of the sheets A A', B B, and O, connected as de* scribed and suitably divided by vertical and horizontal lines, and a certicate of the officers of election, which extends onto every page thereof, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
