(N0 Model!) W. H. NEWTON.
DEHR NER.
Pat6nted Aug. 25, 1891.
NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM H. NEVTON, OF MACON, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONEHALF T ALBERT M. MCGEE, OF SAME PLAGE.
DEHORNER.
SPEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 458,537, daterl August 25, 1891.
Application filed February 14, 1891. Serial N0. 381,468. (N0 model.)
T0 all wh0m it may c0ncern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. NEWTON, of Macon, in tl1e county 0f Maeon and State of lllinois, have invented certain new ancl useful Improvements in Dehorners, 01. whieh tl1e following is a speeification.
This invention relates t0 implements f0r dehorning cattle. Its objeet is to provide a safe and effeefive Instrument for that purro pose; and lt consists in the details of coustruction and combinations of parts hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the clrawings acoompanying anal forming a part 0f this speeifiation, Figure 1 is a front I 5 view 0f the dehorner With the eutter closecl in the shield. Fig. 2 is a side view 01: the Same. Fig. 3 is a representation of the cutter and head carrying it.
The cutter 1 is preferably eircular in Out- 2o line, and it has sets of holes 5 and 4, with either of which the heacl 2 may be connectecl by means of bolts 4 and 5. The lever 3 is seeured t0 head 2 and is provicled a1: its end with a suitable handle. The cutter is pivoted on holt 4 between two duplicate plates held apart in parallel juxtaposition by means of strut-bolts, and which shield the edge and provide an opposing surface 01 bearing therefor. The annular part 6 provides an opening, through which The horn protrudes when the device is in operation ancl also aets against t-he pressure of the cutter. Parts 7 and 8 of the pmtecting-plates conform the one to ehe swing 0f the cutter and the other t0 the position 0f the cutter when open, as Seen in dotted lines in Fig. l, the plates being bent 0n the' lines d (Z d d 10 bulge outwardly between said lines ancl the edge 8 for the passage of the cntter-head and its handle, while the portions of the plates between 6 and 7 are closer togeth er, the spaeebetween them being suffieient only for the passage of the cutter 1, and they protect the cuttingedgze agalnst dulling 0b jects, and also protect the cattle against the eutting-eclge. The cutter is sharpened all around, and when one part becomes dull the position of the head 2 may be ehanged and a sharp surface be brought into use.
I claim- The combination 0f the circnlar cntter l, having Sets 0f holes 4 ancl 5, the head 2, adapted to all the sets 0f holes, the cutter-inelosing plates having the annular parts 6, and the pivot 4 for the eutter, as Set forth.
In testimony whereof I sign my name in the presence 0f two subseribing wirnesses.
WMJH. NEWTON.
