SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 456,036, dated July 14, 1891.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, NATHANIEL HUNT and FRANCIS C, CASH, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Lynn, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ash-Sifters, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to ash-sitters; and my we ro obfiects are, first, to provide a simple and compact arrangement of parts especially adapt- 1 ing the sitter for use about the house and which will require a minimum expenditure of labor inoperation.

It is my object, second, to provide a sifter for household use having a removable receiv ing and dumping pan adapted to be placed near or in the ash-pit of the stove to receive the ashes when dumped, the said sitter-box being constructed to tightly inclose the ashpan when filledwith ashes from the stove and placed therein and to prevent the escape of dust while the sifting action is going on.

With these ends in view my invention in cludes a Sifter-box combined with a removable ash-pan having means whereby itmaybe dumped after being placed in the sitter-box, and in the arrangement of the screens and the receptacles for the coals and ashes, and, further, in various details hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view with the cover lifted. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional View of the receiving-pan and the parts adjacent thereto at the upper end of the box. Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the entire sifter.

The Sifter-box is oblong in general shape, and has a lateral extension a at its base, in which are located-the receiving-drawers for the coals and dust, respectively. At the upper end of the box the receiving-pan A is supported by a skeleton frame F, into which the pan is set. In the center of the pan is formed an opening through which the ashes fall to the stationary sieves below. The pan is sufficiently deep to receive a quantity of ashes and at the same time to permit the cover D to be closed and tightly fastened, and

while the ashes are in the pan and the box is being closed the opening in the bottom of the pan is also closed to hold the ashes in place until the box is closed .dust-tight. A slide C controls the opening in the pan, it being arranged in grooves formed in the skeleton frame. It is operated by a handle 0 on the outside of thebox and having a rod extending through the slot and connected with the slide. This slot is covered by a pivoted catch 5 when the siftingaction is going on to prevent the escape of dust. The sieves E are inclined and extend from opposite sides of the box, the upper sieve discharging upon the lower one, and from thence the coals are directed into the box I, located in the lateral extension at of the base. The rear edge of the box does not project beyond the wall of the box to any material extent, and it is thus entirely screened from the falling dust, which after leaving the sieves falls into the drawer I, located below the coal-drawer and extending to the rear beyond the same, having its bottom at its rear inclined upward.

The pan, as before stated, is combined with the skeleton frame F, and a bail 3 is provided, combined with these parts, by which they may be removed. The slide, being carried in grooves of the skeleton frame, is removable with the pan, and when the pan is placed near or in the stove ash-pit to receive the ashes the opening in'it is closed by the slide, as also when the pan is being conveyed to and placed in the Sifter-box. The slot in the box is open at its upper end, and this permits the removal of the stem of the slide. The covering-catch 5 has a notch in one edge which receives the stem of the slide when the box is closed dust-tight. It will be seen that the dumping and sifting actions take place after the box is closed tightly and there is no chance for the escape of dust.

I claim as my invention A 1. In combination,the box, with the screens, a movable cover, a seat within the box at its upper end to receive a removable'pan, the removable pan having a slide and a stem, and a slot in the box-casing opening to the upper edge, whereby the pan may be removed or placed in position, the cover of the box being adapted to close over the ,pan and the slot, substantially as described.

2. In combination, the box, the removable pan, the frame for supporting the same, also removable, and the slide movable in grooves in said frame, substantially as described.

3. In combination, the box, with its screens, said box having: a lateral extension at its lower end, the ash-pan extending from the front of said extension entirely across the body of the box, and the coal-pan arranged above the ash-pan and extending from the, front of the extension to the main body of the box, substantially as described.
