UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EMIL SALTZKORN AND LUDWIG NICOLAI, ()F DRESDEN, GERMANY.
MACHINE FOR CUTTING PASTEBOARD, 80c.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 454,968, dated June 30, 1891.
Application filed November 29, 1890- Serial No. 373,097. (No model.) I
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, EMIL SALTZKORN and LUDWIG NICOLAI, both subjects of the King of Saxony, residing at Dresden, Saxony, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Machines for Cutting Pasteboard and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
The hitherto-known pasteboard-shears, in which co-operate two scissors-like blades, of which one is fixed to the table and the other to a lever-shaped beam, produce with two or three layers of pasteboard of medium thickness but an uneven and imperfect out, which makes the pasteboard unfit for many purposes. The paper-cutting machines now in use are unsuited for these purposes, as their operation necessitates a number of movements of the hand, which involve loss of time.
The subject of the present invention is a machine for cutting pasteboard and the like, tobe used in the place of thepasteboard-shears, and has the advantage of producing a smooth and neat cut for several layers of stout pasteboard or the like. Thisis obtained bymeansof one knife or blade with a sharp edge, which slides past the supporting plate or table, and thereby receives a drawing motion similar to that which is given to the cutting-knife by the hand.
Figure 1 is afront elevation of a cutter constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the knife raised. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the front edge, showing the knife. Fig. 4 is a detail section of the knife.
Like letters of reference denote the same parts in all the figures.
The knife handle or blade carrier at is mounted on abolt or pivot I), carried in a bearing or block 0, which is capable of reciprocating in a frame or guide 01-. The knife handle or lever a extends beyond the pivot b, and carries at the projecting end a roller e, which works in the curved slot f of a bracket 9. A weight it may be secured to the extension of the knife handle or lever, as shown, or to an arm secured on the pivot Z2.
On raising the knife handle or lever a the block a is moved toward the table through the guiding action of the cam-slot f, while a displacement in the opposite direction is effected by pressing the knife-handle downward. 'A sliding motion is thereby given to the knife m in cutting, which, on account of ing movable in fixed guides, of a cam and an extension connected to said knife co-operating with the cam to move the knife and its bearing longitudinally, substantially as described.
2. In a pasteboard cutting machine, the combination, with the knife pivoted on abearing movable in fixed horizontal guides, and having a rearward extension, of the diagonal cam with which said extension co-operates to move the knife longitudinally, substantially as described.
3. In a pasteboard cutting machine, the combination, with the table having the fixed horizontal guides mounted thereon at one end, the cam-bracket also aflixed to said table, and the'bearing-block movable longitudinally in said guides, of the knife pivoted to said block with the rearward extension co-operating with the cam to move the knife longitudinally, and the counterweight, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in presence of two witnesses.
