WZFSQESSES \/E FOR 6 2% M W, 7 A TOF JE s NITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN F. LAMB, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SUSPENSION FRAME FOR GARMENTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 45d,579, dated June 23, 1891.
Application filed December 15, 1890. Serial No. 374,824. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN FRANKLIN LAMB, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension- Frames for Garments, of which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which said invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are elevations showing my improvement in use; Fig. 8, a front elevation of one of the supporting-clamps enlarged; Fig. 4:, an edge elevation of the same, and Figs. 5 and 6 views showing modifications in the formation of the frame.
, Like letters and figures of reference inclicate corresponding parts in the diiferent figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to frames for suspendin coats, skirts, and similar garments when not in use; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simpler, cheaper, and more effective device of this character than. is now in. ordinary use.
The nature and operation of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
The frame consists of a vertical rod or handle A, on the upper end of which is detachably secured a laterally-projecting head B, of a shape suitable to receive and support a coat in the ordinary manner of frames of this description. A. screw-eye is turned centrally into the head 13, and is adapted to support the frame on a horizontal rod (Z, passing through said eye.
On each arm f of the head a flat spring g is secured, said springs resting in grooves in said arms and overlapping the ends thereof. On the under side of each arm f a horizontal rod h is secured, respectively, at each side of the handle A. Spring-clamps D are fitted to slide laterally on said rods 71 of said members are spread by the ends of a spring j, coiled around said pivot between the cars f in the usual manner of supporters of this class. This arrangement permits the clamps D to be moved laterally, any number of said clamps being arranged on the same rod h, which serves as a common pivot therefor. The springs j, separating the members of the clamp, cause the ears 2' to bind on the pivot h and sustain said clamps in position thereon.
In the use of my improvement the frames are designed to be hung in series on a rod d by means of their eyes I). Coats are hung in the usual manner over the head B of said frame.
In suspending a skirt, as E, the handle A is passed through the skirt and the waistband on at each side is secured in a clamp D on opposite rods h, as shown in Fig. 1, said clamps being moved 011 said rod to conform to the size of the skirt, as described.
The device is used to sustain trousers, as shown in Fig. 2, the front of the waistband being secured in one clamp D and the rear thereof fastened to the head by the opposite spring 9, the trousers in this position being permitted to hang straight without creasing.
In the form shown in Fig. 5 the head B and eye I) are constructed integral of wire, the springs g being omitted and the clamps D mounted on the lower rod of said head.
Practically the same construction is shown in the form shown in Fig. 6, the ends of the head being projected upward at p to support the puffed sleeves of waists or similar garments. By means of the handle A the frame can readily be removed from the rod (Z and the garment detached therefrom.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of the handle A with a later ally-projecting head I3 thereon, provided with a supporting-eye, a rod arranged longitudinally 011 the under side of said head, and spring-clamps D, mounted on said rods and spring-clamps having their members pivoted adjustable laterally thereon, substantially as on said rod and laterally adjustable thereon, described.
substantially as described. BENJAMIN F. LAMB.
2. In a device of the character described, Witnesses: the head B, provided with the rods 7L and O. M. SHAW,
clamping-springs g, in combination with the K. DURFEE.
