- E. CLARK.
DETAGHABL G FOR FURNITURE.
No. 451,755. Patented May 5, 1891.
' Zia/19%? UN TED STATES ERWIN B. CLARK, OF GRAND -RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
DETACHABLE L E G FOR FURNITURE.
SPECIFICATION. forming part of Letters Itatent No. 451,755, dated May 5,1891.
Application filed my 21, mm Serial No. 359,402. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ERWIN B. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing 'at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented 'a certain new and useful Detachable Leg for Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a detachable leg forfurniture, and is adapted for tables, stands, chairs, andother articles of furniture; and the object of the invention is to provide a sectional leg with novel means for detachably securing the parts together to permit the convenient removal of thelower leg-section Without disturbing the upperleg-section, which is attached to the table-top orother article.- To accomplish this obj ect my invention involvesthe features of construction and the combination or arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed, reference being made to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 shows a longitudinal vertical secj'tional view of a furniture-leg constructed in accordance with my invention, and Fig. 2
shows a horizontal sectional view of the same on line a: a: of Fig. 1.
. .Similar letters and figures refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
, A represents the upper portion of a leg, which is usually attached permanently to the table or otherarticle of furniture. It is ordinarilyconstructed square in cross-section, but may be of any suitable form.
' Slrepresents a slot, which in-vertical section is preferably slotted, as shown in Fig. 1.
In the example of my invention illustrated in thedrawings I have shown three sections,
.A representing the upper section, D- representing the middle section, and Grepresenting the lower section. 'l hesection D is provided'fwithv an opening entirely through it,-
and is shoulderedso as to fit into the grooves shown by 22 inFig. 1 at the top. 7 Atthe bot- .tom' it has a circular groove and shoulder, into 45.
which fits the lower leg, the connection'being shown by-ll. I
B is a bolt, preferably of iron or steel,
which is shown withthe head 5. The groove S, being cut from the side of the leg, allows the head and upper end of the bolt to be slipped into the position shown in the drawings, in which position. the head rests againsttheshoulders formed by the upper end of the slot, the slot at the upper end being broader or T-shaped.
Into the part 0 of the leg a hole 1s bored.
(Shown by the dotted lines H.) Intothishole is fitted a nut N, which is provided with screw-threads adaptedto engage vwith the. screw-threads on the lower end of the bolt 13.
E represents the hole in the lower section of the leg, which may be made a little deeper than the length of the bolt, if required. The shoulders upon which the bolt-head 5 rests are shown by 4. i
In case the table-leg were made in two sections only the joint 1 1 would be dispensed integral with each other. In case more thanthree sections are used a third joint, similar to the joint shown by 1 1,would be used. It isevident that the number of sections may -with-and...the parts D and C be constructed be increased or decreased to suit the conven 5 ience of the manufacturer. The bolt,'however, should extend fromitsconnection with the upper section to its "connection with the lower section, thereby binding together all the parts of the leg.
- I have described what I deem tobe thebe'st method of securing the bolt in position; but it is obvious that variations might be made without'departing from the spirit of my invention. j
By means of the construction above de-- scribed that part of the leg below the joint 2. 2 may be readily detached by turning the leg and with it the nut, thereby loosening the head of the bolt within the slot S an'd'sliding the bolt out of the slot. The leg and the nut N should, however, be turned asufficient dis- -tance to withdraw the tenon in the section D from the socket in the section A, so that the section D can slip horizontally with reference to the upper section, carrying-with it the bolt. It is obvious that the bolt extending lengthwisethrough the detachable center sections from the upper to .the lowersections will greatly strengthen the l g, and by use of this bolt the leg can be carved or turned into. any desired shape or size without weakening the leg. It is also obvious that, the leg being constructed in sections, shortpieces of stock can be used in building'up't-he leg, and, if found. desirable diflerent varieties of woodmay be used in the san 1e1eg,thereby giving a variety to the furnitu e to which it is attached.
Having thu described my invention, what I claim to have invented, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A leg for tables and other articles of furniture, consisting of the upperleg-seetion A, having the T-shaped slot S ex tending from its outer side to its center, the screw-bolt B, adapted to be slipped laterally from the side of the upper leg-section into the T-shaped slot thereof, the lower leg-section 0, having a longitudinal bore and a transverse bore II extending from the exterior of one side and intersecting the longitudinal bore, and the nut N, adapted to be inserted laterally through the transverse bore of the lower legsection to engage the screw-bolt, so that by turning the lower section it can be removed, replaced, and tightened, substantially as described.
2. A leg for tables and other articles of furniture, consisting of the'upper leg-sect ion A, having the T-shaped slot S extending from its outer side to its center, the screw-bolt 13,- adapted to .be slipped laterally from the side of the upper leg-section into the T-shaped slot thereof, the intermediate leg-section D, having a center bore and asoeket-eonneetion with the upper leg-section, the lower leg-section having a socket connection with the intermediate leg-section and provided with a longitudinal bore and a transverse bore H, extending from the exterior of one side and intersecting the longitudinal bore, and the nut N, adapted to be inserted laterally through the transverse bore of the lower'leg-section to engage the screw bolt, substantially as described.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my c hand and seal in the presence of two wit- HBSSGS.
