To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JOHN P. STEPP, Brooklyn, Kings county, and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Book-Straps and Like Articles, of which the following is a specification.
' This improvement relates to book-straps, shawl-straps, and like articles, which consist, ro essentially, of a frame, a windlass mounted to rotate within the frame, straps wound upon the windlass and passing through the/frame, and a locking device for fastening the windlass in any particular position.
My improvement consists in a novel looking device for securing the windlass in position.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side View of a book-strap embodying my improvement. Fig. 2 is an end view with certain parts broken away. Fig. 3 is a view like Fig. 2, showing the locking device in a different position.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
It will be seen that the locking-lever is free to turn at right angles to its locking position. This is convenient when the articles are packed several in a boX for shipment, as theprojecting handle can be turned in a position to obviate the necessity of using a wide box.
A designates a frame, which preferably will be made of metal with a straight main portion a and upturned parallel end portions a a B designates a windlass supported between the upturned end portions a a of the frame A. It may consist of a metal shaft 1) and a wooden hand-piece b surrounding said shaft. The shaft may be made polygonal, so as to interlock with the hand-piece and prevent the latter from moving independently of it. The end of the shaft, which is journaled in the upturned endrportion a of the frame A, is rounded to turn easily in a bearing formed in said end portion of the frame. The other end is, however, polygonal where it passes through the end portion a of the frame A and is not supported in the latter. The ex- 30 tremity of this end of the shaft is rounded beyond the end portion a of the frame A, and is fitted into a bearing formed in a piece a which is fastened by rivets (.t' or otherwise to the end portion (L2.
0 designates a locking device consisting of a lever which, as here shown, is fulcrumed between its ends to one of the rivets a, whereby the piece a is secured to the end portion a of the frame A. One end is provided with a notch a which, when the lever is swung into one position, is adapted to engage with the polygonal portion of the windlass and lock the same against movement in either direction. The other end of the lever extends beyond the frame A and forms a handle whereby the lever may be manipulated.
The hand-piece b of the windlass is considerably shorter than the distance between the end portions of the frame S, and is so fastened on its shaft 1) as to leave beyond it portions of the shaft upon which straps D may be wound. These straps are of ordinary or any suitable form, are attached to 5 the shaft 1) of the windlass beyond the handpiece 12 of the windlass, and pass thence through slots in the main portion ct of the frame A. By my improvement I produce a very simple, inexpensive, and effective locking dcvice.
\Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
