COMBINED FOLDING BED AND DRESSER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,492, dated May 5, 1891.

To a whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, MARION LAIN and ALONZO LAIN, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Folding Beds and Dressers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, refenee being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

Our invention relates to improvements in combined folding beds and dressing-cases; and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of devices, which will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claim.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of our inven tion in the form of a dresser. Fig. 2 isa rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional View taken on a line a: a: of Fig. 2, and showing in dotted lines the invention in the form of a bed. Fig. 4. is a detail perspective view of the combined pulley and eccentric.

Referring to the drawings by letter, A represents thecasing of the bed with the vertical stationary side walls B, the top 0, and the stop-bar D, which depends from the top 0 and connects the upper portion of the side walls. The walls are also connected at their base by the horizontal transverse connection E. At the lower forward ends of the side walls are the forward extensions 1), the upper edges of which are curved in quarter-circular shape. The horizontal cross-piece F extends from the front upper corner of the forward extensions rearwardly. A similar horizontal cross-piece G is secured to and extends from side to side of the forward extensions 1). The drawer g operates between and slides upon the crosspieces F and G, respectively. To the outer face of the drawer is attached the handle g.

The bed consists of the sides H, the headboard I, the foot-board J, and the bottom or base K, in which is fitted the mirror 70, and which forms the front of the dressing-case when the bed is raised and confined within the case, as shown. The bed is pivotally secured by hinges on the front side of the bottom or base bar K to the rear upper surface of the transverse cross-pieee F, on which it rests when used as a bed.

At the upper end of the bottom or base bar K are legs is, which are preferably of ornamental appearance and of such arrangement as to appear to be a part of the front of the dressing-case when arranged as such. IVhen the bed is lowered, the legs swing out by gravity to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and serve to support the lower end of the bed. The swinging shelves L are suspended from the bracket l on the front side of dresser or bottom of the bed, and may be employed to support articles of the toilet, 820.

A pair of U-shaped brackets M depend from and are secured in any suitable way to the top 0 of the stationary casing. In the depending arms of the bracket M are secured the ends of the shaft or axle N, upon which is journaled loosely the combined pulley and eccentric O, which is of one casting, preferably, but which may be made separately and secured together by rivets or otherwise. hen the bed is up, the pulley and eccentric are in the position shown in Fig. 2. The ends of the ropes P are secured at 2 to the pulleys, and have secured to their lower ends the weight Q, which, it will be seen, nearly reaches the floor. The ropes R are secured by staples or otherwise to the curved lower or head edges of the bed sides, then, engaging round the sheaves S, pass upward and around the long arm of the cam 0, and are attached thereto at the point 3 near the center of the pulley-eccentric O and secured to the same at 3, Fig. 4. \Vhen the bed is lowered, the ropes R, passing around the cams 0, revolve the pulleys 0, thus winding the ropes P and raising the weight Q.

Secured vertically to the side walls B of the casing are guide-bars T, which are provided on their inner faces with the longitudinal grooves 23, in which slide the projections or guide-pins a of the transverse bar U, which is hinged to the head-piece I of the bed. This arrangement, as will be seen, prevents any chance of lateral displacement.

The upper portion 0 of the dressing-case is hinged to the bottom of the bed at d. The sides of the upper portion of the casing are quadrant-shaped and adapted to fit upon the upper concave edges of the forward extensions b. In said upper portion a of the dressing-case are drawers 6, which slide upon and 5 straps i, which are also hinged at their lower ends to the lower end of the extension I) of the casing. \Vhen the bed is being lowered, the quadrant-shaped sides of the upper portion 0 slides oy'er the concave face or edge of IO the sides of the lower portion 13 until the top reaches the level of the surface of the horizontal crossbar F. The straps h bend at right angles to each other and serve to draw said upper section of the dressing-case forward :5 while the same is descending, and thus cause the upper section 0 to rest directly in front of and at the same elevation as the lower section Z1, as shown in the dot-ted lines in Fig. 2). Casters may be arranged under the corners 20 of the stationary casing.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by hotters latent, is

In a folding bed, the combination, with the casing, of the bed proper located therein, a pulley in the upper part of said casing, a cam on said pulley, a rope secured to said bed, passing around the long arm of said cam, and secured thereto near the center, a pulley S, around which the said rope passes, a weight in the rear of the casing, and a rope connecting said weight with the pulley,substantially as described.
