Description

SHOVEL BLANK.
No. 451,469. Patented May 5,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MILTON H. EVANS, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SHOVEL-BLANK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,469, dated May 5, 1891.
Application filed December 20, 1890- Serial No. 375.377. KNo model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILTON H. EVANS, J r a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shovel-Blanks, of which the following is aspecitication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a shovel complete, and Fig. 2 is a plan of a blank of which the shovel proper is made.
This invention relates to certain improvements in shovel-blanks, which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Fig. 2 shows a metal sheet designed to form the shovel-blade, and is formed, as shown, by means of being cut or stamped out in such manner as to have theintegral tangs a a and 0. These tangs are designed to be formed to serve as sockets for receiving the handles, as shown in Fig. 1.
The two tangs a a are designed to be bent backward behind tang c and corrugated so as to receive between them the handle B, which is secured therein by means of the rivets s s, passing through the socket thus formed and the said handle. The tang c is bent so as to curve upward and toward the shovel and to extend over it somewhat, and is corrugated in such manner as to form a socket for receiving the auxiliary handle D, held therein by means of the rivets r r, passing through said socket thus formed and the handle D. The fangs a a and 0 may be any desired size and form so they will answer the purpose. Such blank can as well be used for any other kind of shovel or spade than such as is illustrated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows, to wit:
-1. The shovel-blank shown and described, having the three integral tangsa, a and c, the tangs a a being adapted to be turned behind tang c and form a socket for the shovel-handle B, and the tang 0 being adapted to be curved forward and form a socket for the auxiliary handle D, substantially as set forth.
2. The shovel-blank shown and described, consisting of the body portionA and the three integral contiguoustangs cm and c,substantially as and for thepurpose set forth.
3. As anew article of manufacture, a shovel or other blank provided with a body portion and integral tangs adapted to form sockets for a principal and auxiliary handle, substantially as set forth.
