r 0. LA DOW BUTTON FASTENER.
No. 451,419. Patented Apr. 28, 1891.
wucwbov UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES LA DOlV, OF ALBANY, NFAV YORK.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 451,419, dated April 28, 1891.
Application filed December 26,1890. Serial No. 375,830. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES LA Dow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a clasp for the purpose of attaching buttons or other fastening devices to shoes or gloves in such a manner that buttons of any kind can readily be attached and detached and the clasp shall have a smooth unbroken surface next to the foot or Wrist.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side View of my invention applied to a fabric. Fig. 2 represents a side view of Fig. 1 with the clasp open and with out a button on the clasp. Fig. 3 represents an end View of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a side View of my invention, but having a coil for the eye of a button and having a notch or hook 5 adapted to engage with hook a. Fig. 5 represents a side View of 'my invention, having a series of teeth or notches or hooks I), which are a modification of the single notch or hook shown at b in Fig. 4 and of the hook 17 shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
In the drawings the clasp is shown as composed of the parallel bars A and B, bent upon each other at I). The barB enters the fabric, passes under the same the desired distance, and then passes through the fabric again at b and interlocks with the hook a. The bends b and b permitthe barB to rest evenly against the under side of the fabric, and also permit the fabric F to remain smooth. A button 0 may be attached by its eye to the bend a. Said button will then have a free movement in all directions on said bend, so that shoe-buttons of the ordinary type may be attached to any style of button-shoe in a manner that holds the button securely in place Without hurting the foot or wearing the stocking. The clasp may be quickly detached and adjusted to any desired position on the shoe, the hooks b and a interlocking in such a manner that they will not become detached when in use, and they also strengthen the clasp. The bars A and B stand lengthwise relatively to the length of glove or shoe onwhich they are mounted. Any form of button 0 may be carried by the bar A and either made as a part thereof or mounted loosely thereon.
This application has been divided, and a division of the same has been filed March 19, 1891, and serially numbered 385,569, and I disclaim herein the subject-matter claimed in said division.
I claim The herein-described button-fastener, consisting of the parallel bars, one of which has an upwardly-bent loop for the button-eye in the plane of said bars and a hook at the free
