ADJUSTABLE REST FOR HOLDING ELECTRIC LAMPS SUSPENDED.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that we, CYRUs A. DANALS and WILLIAM O. PERRY, citizens of the United States, residing at Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Automatic Adjustable Rests for Holding Electric Lamps Suspended in the Air, of which the following is a clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Our invention relates to the suspension of electric lamps; and its object is to provide means for holding the lamp suspended in the air without having the weight of the lamp on the rope after the lamp has been raised to its position and also to provide for the'easy ad- 3' ustment of the lamp to its position in the rest.

The invention consists of a pulley adapted to be attached to any suitable elevated object, having depending therefrom and pivotally connected thereto a vertical bar, and to which swinging bar is pivotally secured a hook-rest having the projecting arm or finger for tripping the hook in and out of engagement with the arm of the lamp in the raising and lowering of the same.

The invention consists in certain novel features in the arrangement and construction of parts, all as hereinafter described. I

Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the electriclight hanger as suspended on the supporting wire or cable. Fig. 2 is a front view in eleva tion of the device.

In this invention the pulley A, which is provided with a shell for inclosing the same, and which shell forms the direct means for attaching the hanging device to the supporting-cable and also provides the bearings for the shaft of the pulley-wheel, serves, together with the rope, as the means for raising and lowering the lamp. The shell is preferably formed of iron, as is the remainder of the device, and forms a jacket covering the entire pulley and protecting it greatly from the destructive effects of damp weather. Pivotally secured to this shell and on the same shaft as that on which the pulley turns is the depending swinging arm B, but which in this case is preferably formed of two similar bars, one

on each side of the shell or jacket and secured together at their ends, so that they are virtually one bar or piece. The pieces of metal which form this depending arm are straight with the exception of a portion J above its pivot, which is bent or formed at an angle and may be weighted on its end, if necessary, as its sole object is to counterbalance the arm B when drawn out of its vertical position by the raising and lowering of the lamp to and from the hook O and by which the operation of adj usting the lamp is made certain and quickly performed.

To the lower end of the vertical swinging bar B is pivotally secured the hook-rest O, which is also formed after the manner of the dependingarm B, being formed of two hooks rigidly secured together and virtually forming but one, but having an advantage in this construction by giving two bearing portions tothe arm F of the lamp, so that it will be securely held in a horizontal position.

Formed integral with the hook-rest O, or rigidly secured thereto at its pivotal connection with the bar' B, is the trip-finger I, by which the hook is released from the bail F when the bail comes in contact with the finger in the raising of the lamp and engaged by the arm of the lamp in the lowering of the lamp to the rest. 7 To this horizontal piece F, forming the arm of the lamp, is attached on each end the wire ll, supporting the lamp, and at the center of the arm is attached the rope K for raising and lowering the lamp. The rope passes up to and over the pulley, and thence down to any stationary object, where it is secured.

Having thus described our invention,what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. A device for the suspension of lamps, consisting of a swinging depending arm pivotally connected to a pulley-block adapted to be attached to an elevated object, said swinging arm being provided with the counterweightarm and at its lower end with a hook-rest pivotally secured thereto and having projecting arms, substantially as described,whereby the hook-rest will be automatically tripped in and out of engagement with the lamp in the raising and lowering of the same, as set forth.

2. A device for the suspension of lamps, con-,

sisting of a shell or hood inclosing a pulley and adapted to be suspended on a suitable station ary object, the said shellorhood being provided with a depending swing-arm pivotally connected to said shell or hood and provided with the counterweight-arm and at its lower end with a swinging hook having the projecting arms for adapting the hook to be tripped automatically in and out of engagement with the arm of the lamp in the lowering and raising of the same, substantially as set forth.

3. In a device for the suspension of lamps, the depending arms B B, having the counterweightarms J J, pivotally secured to the hanger A and pivotally connected at its lower .end of said depending arm, as set forth.
