L. PRANGE. DIE FOB BUTTON MACHINES.
Patented Apr. 21, 1891.

ATTORNEYS M f n UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEO PRANGE, OF BROOKLYN, NEXV YORK.
DIE FOR BUTTON-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 450,893, dated April 21, 1891.
Application filed September 27, 1890. Serial No. 366,353. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LEO PRANGE, of the city of Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Die for Button-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descripion.
The invention relates to button-machines for pressing glass or jet buttons, such as shown and described in the Letters Patent No. 402,280, granted to A. Scholz, under date of April 30, 1890.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved die which is simple and durable in construction and serves to form a stipple-surface on the buttons.
The invention consists of a die formed by breaking a piece of hard metal into two parts, the broken surface of each part forming the face of the die.
The invention also consists of certain parts and details and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is ase ctional side elevation of part of a button-machine provided with the improvement. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the improvement, and Fig. 3 is a face view of a modified form of the improvement.
The button-machine A, to which the improvement is applied, is preferably of the construction shown in the patent above referred to and illustrated partly in Fig. 1. The button-machine A is provided with the movable die B, having jaws O, supporting the stapleD, adapted to be pressed into the button. The movable die B is adapted to slide toward the fixed die E, having a face F, against which the glass, jet, or other material is pressed, so as to take the configuration of the said face. The die E is formed by breaking a piece of hard metal, preferably steel, into two parts, the broken surface of each part forming the face F of the die.
In breaking a piece of metal, such as steel, the grain forms a stipple, and when the jet or glass is pressed against this surface a stipplesurface is formed on the face of the button. Usually alarger piece of metal than required for the size of the die is broken in two parts, and the best and most suitable partof the surface of the broken part is selected and turned or otherwise formed into the die. If desired, the stipplesurface of the die may be further engraved with ornaments G, as illustrated in Fig. 3, the said engraved parts forming raised ornaments on the face of the button, the background, however, being a stipple. Thus it will be seen that in a very simple manner a die can be formed which, if engraved by hand to form a stipple, would be very expensive.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A metal die for forming buttons, having its impression or working face composed of a fractured surface, whereby a stipple-surface is given to the die by the grain of the metal, substantially as described.
2. A die for button-machines of the character described, having its impression or working face composed of a fractured surface, the grain of the metal of said fractured surface forming a stipple and provided with ornaments sunken into said stipple-surface, substantially as described.
LEO PRANGE.
