CLAMP-ELECTRODE FOR ELECTRICAL DENTAL APPARATUS.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THOMAS STEWART WIL- SON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Clamp-Electrodes, of which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, the same forming part of this specification.

My invention relates to an article of manufacture; and it consists of a mechanical devicc--a clamp-electrodeto be used in 0011- nection with an electrical dental apparatus for the purpose to secure the hold of the same in the hands of a patient during the act of treatment by means of electricity.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 shows the clamping device when locked and in open position, the latterin dotted lines. Fig. 2 exhibits the clamping device in position when mounted upon a patients hand, and Fig. 3 explains the use of the device in connect-ion with an electrical dental apparatus.

This device is introduced for securing the electrode firmly to the hands of a patient, especially when extracting teeth, as it happens commonly when in the moment the electric shock occurs the patient, with a starting motion of his body, opens his hands holding the electrodes and lets the same drop. The result will be an interruption of the action, as the electric current passes off without producing the desired effect. To avoid this unpleasant occurrence I provide the electrode A with an adjustable clamp or guard B, the same consisting of a pliable strip of metal slightly bent in its middle portion (Z to fit the curved form of the hand.

The electrode is a well-known appliancea metallic handle of cylindrical form containing a small tube in its center with projecting ends, through which a wire passes from the electric apparatus, and is provided with two perforated arms 0. I9, swinging on stirrups 0 cl, the same fastened to the ends of the electrode.

The above-described clamp or guard B is removably attached with its rear end portion 6 to the arm a, where it is held in position by a screw f, while the front end 9 of the clamp, provided with a bulky head It, is connected with the other arm I) by passing the said heads through the holes at n in suitable elevation to clamp the hand tightly between the guard and the electrode, so that the same cannot be shaken off or dropped at any occurence.

In Fig. 3 of the drawings is shown the electrodes clamped to the hands of a patient. The wire from the negative(-)pole of the electric apparatus terminates with the electrode in one hand of the patient, while the wire from the positive pole passes through the electrode in his other hand to the operator, who holds the forceps connected with the end of the wire and the circuit is closed.

If it should become necessary to interrupt the electric current during an operation, the same is accomplished by the so-called cutoff C-a performance which is well understood and not subject of my invention.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a clamp-electrode to be used in connection with an electric dental apparatus, the clamp 13, in combination with an electrode A, the same provided with stirrups c 61, connected with movable arms a 19, substantially as shown, for the purpose specified.

2. In a clampelectrode, the handle A, in combination with an adjustable clamp or guard B, the same having a bent d and the ends e 9, connected with movable arms, the same hinged to the electrode, substantially as shown, and for the purpose set forth.
