Description

(N0 Mod I FRANCIS.
HOLDER FOR GRAVERS WHILE BEING GROUND. No. 449,673. Patented Apr. 7, 1891.
(1% IIHI] UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALLAN E. FRANCIS, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO.
HOLDER FOR GRAVERS WHILE BEING GROUND.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,673, dated April 7, 1891. Application filed January 24, 1890. Sen'al No. 338,030. No model.)
To all whom it play concern.-
Be it known that I, ALLAN E. FRANCIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Ouyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Holder for Gravers while being Ground, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for grinding gravers; and it consists of the novel constructions and combination, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim. To do this the holder II is turned on the post to one side, so as to present the graver sidewise on the stone. Then by carrying the graver on the stone it maybe ground to an edge on the side. The holder may then be swung around to the opposite side, the graduate indicating the same point on that side. The graver is then ground to a fine edge 011 that side.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my new holder for gravers, as seen in position for use. Fig. 2 is a top or plan View of the same. Fig. 3 is an under side view to show an under side graduate.
A is a post standing upon a roller-carriage B.
C is a sleeve fitted to be carried by said post. It has a split side provided with lugs or ears 0 0, through which a screw passes for clamping the sleeve to the post. From the said sleeve an arm D extends horizontally, its outer end being made in the form of a quadrant D The center of said quadrant has a hub with a pin (l extending horizontallytherefrom on one side.
E is a sleeve, also split and provided with a clamping-screw c, fitted onto said pin (Z, and carries a graduated half-circle F, and on its top side is provided a pointer f for indicating on the graduate on the quadrant the angles to which the graver-holder should be set for dressing the face and heel of a graver. The
graduated half-circle is for indicatingin similar way how to dress the sides of graver-point. Depending from sleeve E is a post E to which the graver-holder H is attached.
The holder I make the subject of a separate application, Serial No. 338,032, filed January 24, 1890.
The manner of using this device is as follows: The holder is removed from the graverstock with the graver still in it and is attached to the post E of the plane, and the sleeve C adjusted on the post A to proper height, (indicated by the graduate thereon,) and the sleeve E adjusted to the angle desired, as indicated by the pointer on quad rant-graduate, and the holder also adjusted to desired position, as indicated by the under scale. The plane is now placed upon the stone for grinding, as seen in Fig. 1, the roller-carriage B riding on the stone as the plane is pushed back and forth.
It will be seen from the foregoing that this device is convenient and readily adjusted for the purpose of perfectly dressing all the facets of a graver.
Having described my invention, I claim- The holder for gravers, consisting of post A and carriage B, split sleeve 0, having clampscrew and supported on said post A and provided with arm D, carrying graduated quadrant D having pin (1, the split sleeve E, provided with a clamp-screw and supported on pin d and having graduated half-circle F and pointerf, and the depending post E carrying tool-holder H, all constructed and combined to operate substantially as described.
