UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. DAVENNIOF GREENVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
RIBBON-CLASP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,467', dated March 3l, 1891..
Application filed October 31, 1890. Serial No. 369,916. (No model.)
To aZZ 'whom t may concern:
Beit known that I, JAMES E. DAVENNY, of Greenville, in the county of Mercer and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ribbon-Clasps;
` and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, refe erence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is acentral vertical sectional View of my improved ribbon reel and clasp. Figs. 2 and 3 are views of the opposite sides thereof.
This invention is an improvement in ribbon or tape reel clasps; and its object is to enable the `ribbon to be run rapidly off the reel or spool and to confine the cut end of the ribbon when the spool is replaced in the case; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
Referringto the drawings by letter, the reel or spool A is a cylindrical box, on the periphery of which the ribbon or tape is wound, as usual, either with or Without the paper strip. In the center of the end piece a of the box A is an eyelet C, through which is loosely passed an elastic cord D, having a loop d at its ont-er end and its inner end knotted, so that it cannot be drawn entirely through the eyelet. From the center of end piece b of the spool projects a short-headed stub E, which, as shown, is attached to said piece by riveting it to 'washers e. The cord D is turned over the perimeter of t-he spool and ribbon thereon and its loop d is buttoned onto the stud E, thereby fastening the cord at. both ends, and it, by reason of its elasticity, will bind the ribbon or tape to the spool, as usual. The cord can be readily unbnttoned, thus freeing the ribbon and permitting it to be unwound from the spool with rapidity, and after it is cutthe cord is rebuttoned thereover at. the proper point to confine the end of the out ribbon, and the cord, owing to its textile and rough surface, will bind on the ribbon and effectually prevent its slipping thereunder, so that the ribbon is kept taut on the spool.
I am aware that elastic cords and bands have been heretofore used to fasten drags and rollers to spools.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- The combination, with a ribbon spool or reel having a stud or button fixed to one side, of an elastic cord fastened by one end to the side of the spool opposite the stud and having a loop d in its free end adapted to be caught on said stud when the cord is bent transversely over the periphery of the spool, thereby clasping the ribbon Without drags or rollers, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I a'fiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. 4
JAMES E. DAVENNY.
