UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VINCENT P. TOMMINS, OF NE\V YORK, N. Y.
DISH-COVER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 449,144, dated March 31, 1891.
Application filed December 24, 1890. Serial No. 37 5,676. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, VINCENT P. TOMMINS, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dish-Covers, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myimprovement is to provide a cover for di'shes, whereby access is afforded to the con tents thereof without removing the said cover; and the invention consists in a cover constructed in two sections, one of which is adapted to be rotated horizontally around the other, and each section provided with annular strips at its base portion, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan of a dishcover constructed according to my invention and shown partly open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof, taken on the line a: a, Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same, taken on the line 3 y, Fi 2.
A designates a cover, composed of a sta tionary section B and a rotary section 0, pivotally connected together at their apexes and each having an annular strip designated, respectively, b and o, secured by solder or other means to its base portion. The section B rests on a dish corresponding with it in circular .form, and has its annular strip 19 provided with an upwardly-extending flange Z/ around its outer edge, forming a support and guide for the rotary section 0. The annular strip 0 of the section 0 rests on the flange b, and is provided with a downwardly-extending flange 0' around its inner edge to loosely fit the inner side of the flange b. The section 0 is provided with a stud 0 adapted to enter notches b in the section B to limit the motion of the former section when fully open or closed. The section B is provided with a sleeve 6 rigidly secured thereto at its apex, and the section 0 is provided with a knob or finger-piece c loosely fitting said sleeve, and by which the section C may be rotated.
'The two sections B and O are secured together by means of a bolt D passing through the sleeve and having a head cl fitting the v hollow portion of the said knob c and having a nut on its inner end. If desired, one or more washers (1' may be employed to adjust the connection between the head d and knob 0 By this construction the annular strips 1) and c at the base of their respective sections afford a protection against accidental bending or injury to the sections when detached and handled in cleaning, and their bearing and guiding surfaces in contact are also ctfectually guarded against dirt or other material tending toobstruct the free motion of the rotary section.
Having now described my improvement, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A dish-cover constructed in two sections pivotally connected together at their apexes, one being adapted to rotate horizontally around the other, and each of said sections having an annular strip secured to its base portion, one of which serves as a support and guide to the other, substantially as described.
2. A dish-cover composed of a stationary section, and a rotary section pivoted to and adapted to rotate around the said stationary section, the latter having an annular strip secured to its base provided with an upwardlyextending flange around its outer edge, and the rotary section having an annular strip secured to its base and provided with a downwardly-extending flange around its inneredge and fitting the flange of the stationary section, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the stationary section B, having an annular strip b, provided with a flange 19, secured to its baseand having a sleeve b projecting from its apex, of the rotary section 0, having an annular strip 0 to rest on the strip 1), and provided with a flange c fitting the flange b, secured to its base, and also having a finger-piece c fitting the said sleeve [1 and secured thereto by a bolt and nut, substantially as described.
