Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MERRITT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Springielchin the county ot Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-friting Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention in type-writing machines relates more especially to the construction of the type bars or levers and to the means for operating the same, and has for its main objects to simplify and cheapen the machine and improve its inode of operation.
To these ends my invention consists in the features of constructionand combinations of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings which accompany this specification, Figure l is a top plan view of a portion of a type-writing machine involving my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical central section taken at the line a; at of Fig. l, with the printing-roller or platen added in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a detail view, enlarged scale, of a type-bar, its hanger, a push-rod, and a guide for the latter; and Fig. it is a bottoni plan of a type-bar and its hanger drawn about full size.
In the several views the same part will be found designated by the same numeral or letter of reference.
A represents the bed-plate of the machine, upon which four posts or pillars B are mounted.
C represents the usual top plate or typecircle, supported by said posts or pillars.
E represents the type-bars or type-levers, F the type-basket, and G the platen or printingroller.
Each type-bar is jonrnaled or fulcrumed at l in a loop or hanger H, which is secured to the top plate C by a set-screw I. The typebars are formed or provided at their pivoted ends with curved or cam surfaces 2, preterably made broad.

Through the perforations in this ring the upper extremities ot' the push-rods protrude and bear against the curved surfaces 2 of the type-levers. The holes in the ring ll and those in the bed-plate through which the sockets a pass are preferably arranged in line, so that the push-rods may work in vertical planes.
The type-basket is preferably supported by arms 13 13, extending to the posts B B..
In the operation of writing the machine is manipulated in the usual way. As the stemkeys are depressed the push-rods 3 are raised, and they in turn elevate the type-bars, as illustrated at Fig. 3. Upon releasing the stem-keys the type-bars and push-rods drop to their normal positions (indicated at Fig. l) by reason of the fact that the combined weight of the type-bar, push-rod, socket d, and rear end of the key-lever exceeds the combined weight of the stem-key, socket S, and forward end of the keylever; but, it' desired, the weights on each side of the key-levers may be equal and springs employed for returning the moving parts. lVhen the type-bars are at rest within the basket, the upper ends ot' the push-rods are situated at the lower ends of the curved portions 2 of the type-bars; but as the connecting-rods are being forced up and are elevating the type-bars the curved por' tions of the latter move over the ends of the push-rods, as indicated bythe dotted lines at Fig. 3, and when the type-bars have been lifted to thel proper extent to make the impression upon the paper surrounding the platen the IOO ends of the push-rods will have reached points 4 on said curved surfaces of the type-bars nearer their upper ends and nearer the pivotal points of the type-bars, as seen in the 'figure last referred to.
It will be observed that the connecting or lifting rods 3 operate upon the type-bars in `front of their fulcra and that the power is applied during the full upward stroke of the type-bars.
The key-lever 5 is a lever of the iirst order and is admirably adaptedto a machine inV which the type-levers are operated as shown; but so far as one feature of my invention is concerned a key-lever of some other construction or arrangement may be employed, and many other changes in the machine may be made without departing` f rom the spirit of my invention.
Although I have shown and prefer the portion 2 made curved, it may be made straight, the only requirement being, that the type-bar shall have a backward bend or hump at its upper end in advance of its fulcrum, by which construction a less movement of the push-rod is required to elevate the type to the printingpoint than is necessary When the lever is made without such bend, and this,it will be understood, is a great desiderat-um.
lVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a type-writing machine, the combination of a top plate or type-ring, a type-lever depending therefrom and having a cam-surface 2 in advance of its fulcrum, averticallyarranged detached push-rod, a horizontallyarranged key-lever, and a finger-key.
2. In a type-writing machine, the combination, with a type bar or lever, of a detached push-rod located in front of the fnlcrum of said type bar or lever, means for actuating said push-rod, and a device, as ll, for guiding and supporting its upper end, substantially as set forth.
