UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THEODORE S. IVILKIN, OF MILIVAUKEE, WVISOONSIN.
GANG-SAW MILL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 447,092, dated February 24, 1891. Application filed January 26, 1889. Serial No. 297,595. (No model.)
To all whom it may conoerm Be it known that l, THEODORE S. WILKIN, of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee, and in the State of Wisconsin, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Gang-Saw Mills; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to gang-saw mills, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawing the figure is an elevation of a portion of a gang-saw mill embodying my invention. V
A is the gang-frame, B the sash, and O the girt.
D is a crank-shaft, the cranks a of which are connected with the girt by arms I).
E are eccentrics, one of which is carried by each end of the crank-shaft. From the wrist c of each eccentric an end of a cross-head F is suspended by an arm G, and the center of the cross-head F is connected with the piston-rod H of a cylinder I. As the eccentrics are coupled to the cross-head on the outside of the frame and the sash is coupled to the cranks on the inside of the frame, the necessity of split connections around the crankshaft and broken joints in the connecting arm or arms is avoided, as the links I), that connect the girt and crank-shaft, will permit of the proper oscillation of the sash during its reciprocation.
The sash-girt O is formed with trunnions L, which fit loosely in sliding blocks M, that in turn travel in guiding-channels m in the 'frame, and rubber or other elastic cushions n are interposed between each of the blocks M and the girt to take uplost motion, and thus steady the action of the sash.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a gang-saw mill, of a sash and crank-shaft, inside connections between the cranks ot' the shaft and sash, eccentrics carried by the crank-shaft on the outside of the frame, a piston and its cylinder, a crosshead connected at each of its ends with one of the eccentrics, and a piston-rod connecting the piston to the cross-head,substantially as described.
2. The combination, in a gang-saw mill, of a downwardly-acting piston, a cross-head suspended therefrom, and eccentrics linked to the cross-head, a crank-shaft carrying the eccentrics, and sash linked to cranks of the crank-shaft. In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand, at Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VVisconsin, in the presence of two witnesses.
