Z. P. LIGHTNER.
PUZZLE.
. Patented Feb. 24, 1891.
UNITED I STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ZACHARIAH FRANK LIGHTNER, OF CARPENTER, DELAVARE.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 446,872, dated February 24, 1891.
Serial No. 343,684. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZACHARIAH FRANK LIGHTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Carpenter, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented a new Puzzle, of which thefollowing is a specification.
I have named the puzzle The \Vorlds Fair.
My invention consists of a shallow box containing a series of divided circles and strips of tin or pasteboard or other suitable material.
The object is to place four marbles (one white and three colored) into the center of the box, and by tilting or shaking the box work the marbles into the spaces allotted to them, as I will specify hereinafter.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings shows theinterior of the box. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the box complete, showing the cover B in position concealing the labyrinth. Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the box on the line m 00 in Fig. 1.
A is the center in which the marbles are placed.
1 1 l 1 are the circles divided by the openings 2, through which the marbles pass.
3 3 3 3 are the upright strips separating the space outside of the circles, dividing the same into four compartments.
4 4 4 4 are strips with openings to admit the marbles into the corners C, N, S, and TV,
which represent the cities of Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and Washington.
B is a cover arranged permanently over and of the same material as the circular strips. It. extends from a to Z), and when in position gives the puzzle the appearance of Fig. 2 and leaves visible only the central space A and the four compartments outside of the circles, thus hiding the marbles from view from the time they leave the center A until they reach the openings 2 of the outer circle. The object is accomplished when the white marble is in the corner 0 and the three colored marbles in N,S,and \V, respectively. All must be inside of the strips at and must not be picked up nor touched after being placed in the center A. Q
I am aware that prior to my invention apuzzle has been made with circles of pasteboard and using marbles in its operation.
That I claim for my invention is- The combination of the box, upri ht strips forming a labyrinth in the center of the box,
the cover concealing the labyrinth only, marbles, and the compartments in the four corners of the box separated from each other and each communicating with the interior of the labyrinth, together forming a puzzle, as described in the foregoing specification.
