This invention vrelates to an improvement in that class ot' shade-fixtures in which the shaderoller isprovided with a spiral spring for the vpurpose of automatically winding' up the shade.

`The invention consists in providing the shaderoller with a stop or fastening composed of a pawl which engages with notches in a hub" attached to one of -the end plates ot' fthe roller, -all being varr-an ged in such a manner that the shade may be retained or held entirely, as well as counterpoise, which have in some instances been employed in connec- 'tion with spring-rollers for holding the shade at any desired point.

' -A represents a windowshade, and B its roller, the latter having a spiral spring, C, fitted within it and arranged in such a manner that it will have a tendencyr to turn the roller B and W'ind up the shade. The spring C is shown in Fig. 4. This feature, however, of a springv within a shade-rollerfor vthe purpose of winding or Vrolling up the shade is not new. Y

The which, when the pawl drops, engages with either of two notches, c c, in the hub F and holds the rollerB, preventing the shade from The projection l) is made rather oblique or inclined at one side, t1, so as to admitoi being forced out ot'a notch, o, when the shade is pulled down. By pulling down the shade, however, so that the projection b ot" the pawl will be forced out of the notch c,`it is fitted in, and then allowing the spring O to turn the roller B briskly back, the projection b will slip over the notches, or the latter pass under the formcrwithout catching, and the shade maybe wound up to the desired height by the spring. I wonid remark that, if desired, the pawl E may be placed underneath or at one side ot the hub F instead ot' Vover it, as represented, and a spring be 'made to bea-r against it, in

ll prefer, however, the former method.

Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A pawl, E, attached to the bracket or other fixture near a shade-roller to engage with n notched, hub, F, attached to one end of said roller, when said parts are used in connection 'or combination with a spiral spring, C, placed within the shade-roller, and all arranged to operate substantially as and lfor the purpose herein set forth.
