CONDUCTOR CUT-OFF.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters atent No. 445,516, dated January 27, 1891.
Application iled Angust 8, 1890. Serial No.36ll81. (No model.)
To all 1071/0711/ t may concern:
Be it known that I, ELBRIDGE G. lVES'l, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canandaigua, in the countyot` Ontario and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Conductor Out-Ott, of which the following' is a specication.
This invention relates to improvements in eut-offs.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive attachment for rain-spouts and other conduits adapted to be readily operated and capable of shutting oit the 'liow of rain-water to a cistern or reservoir.
The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended.
In the drawings, Figure l. is a side elevation of a portion of a rain-spout provided with a eut-off constructed in accordance with this invention, the cut-oft beingl swung down and not in use. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal sectional view, the cnt-oit being shown in operative position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view to show the flanges on the cut-oft'.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, l designates a rain-spout provided at its lower end with a sliding section 2,capable of longitudinal movement on the rain-spout or supply-pipe l, and has its lower end 3 reduced slightly and adapted to Fit in the end al, of a cistern-pipc 5 to form a continuous conduit to a cistern to permit the tlow ot' rain-water therein, and is adapted tobe withdrawn from the Cistern-pipe and engage one arm G of an elbow 7, which is hinged to the cistern-pipe. rlhe elbow is hinged to the pipe 5, and is adapted to be swung on the hinge 8 to bring its arm G to a vertical position and in alignment with the rain-spout to receive the rcdueed end 3 of the sliding section 2 to torm a cut-ofi' for the rain-spout and direct water through the horizontal arm 9 of the elbow and prevent it passing through the cisternpipe to the cistern or reservoir. The upper end i of the cistern-pipe 5 has its edge curved and provided with extensions 10, which form a seat for the arm 9 of the elbow when the said arm 9 is in ahorizontal position and the cut-oft' is in operation, and the said arm f) is provided with curved anges ll, which are arranged upon opposite sides of the arm and form deflectors to shed water and prevent any dripping from the rain-spout or supplypipe entering the cistern-pipe when the cutoft is in use, and in winter the flanges prevent ice forming around the seat and freezing the parts.
It will be seen that the cut-off is exceedingly simple and inexpensive in construetion, and is adapted to be readily applied to any rain-spout and is el'teetive in its operation, and there is no liability of its becoming injured and useless. The cistern-pipe is arranged but a short distance below the rainspout, and the movement ot the sliding section 2 to bring its reduced end into engagement with either the elbow or the eistern-pipe is limited.
From the foregoing description and the aecompanying drawings the construction, operation, and advantages ot the invention will readily be understood.
l. In a cut-oft, the combination, with the supporting-pipe having a sliding section, of the cistern-pipe having its upper end provided with curved edges forming a seat, and the angle-elbowcomposed of straight sections, one of the sections being hinged intermediate its ends to one side of the seat, whereby the elbow is adapted to rest on Athe seat and close the top ot the cistern-pipe, substantially as described.
2. In a eut-ott", the combination of the eistern-pipe having its upper end provided with a scat, the elbow hinged to the cistern-pipe and adapted to rest in the seat and having -f'langes ll, and the supply-pipe having the sliding section adapted to engage either the elbow or the upper end ot the cistern-pipe, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ELBRIDGE G. WEST.
