W. E. PETTENGILL.
- NAIL FULLER. No. 445,077.
Patented Jan. 20, 1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
\VALTER E. PETTENGILL, OF ROCKVILLE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIAIIF TO ASA PETTENGILL, OF SAME PLACE.
NAIL-PU LLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 445,077, dated January 20, 1891.
Application filed February 18, 1890. Serial No. 340,939- (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WALTER E. PETTENGILL, of Rockville, county of Tolland, State of Con.- necticut, have invented an Improvement in Nail-Pullers, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying :lrawings,is a specification .like letters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the pro duction of a simple and eiticient nail-puller of comparatively low cost.
M y improved nail-puller consists, essentially, of two jaws pivoted side by side having their lower ends offset, cams or inclines upon their inner sides above their pivotal point, the inner sides of thejaws overlapping above said cams, and an actuating device intermediate said cams consisting of a headed stud, substantially as will be described.
Figure l in side elevation shows one of my improved nail-pullers in position to be closed under the head of a nail. Fig. 9 shows the nail-puller as about to be lifted to pull the nail; and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the nailpnller alone. I
The nail-puller is composed of two jaws a I), shaped substantially as in the drawings, the said jaws being pivoted together side by side by a pivot c. The jaws a Z) have at their lower ends breaks 0. b, bent or offset, as shown in Fig. 3. to be in line one with the other, and properly shaped to penetrate a board or piece of wood about the headof a driven nail,
as (I, when the said nail-puller is struck at the upper ends of the jaws bya suitablehammer or other device 0, the upper ends of the said jaws being shown as flattened at 2 to provide a proper surface against which the hammer may strike. The inner edges of these jaws a b above the pivot c are shown as of cam shape, (see dotted and full lines,) and in the space between the two jaws is placed a jaw'actuating device, shown in the present embodiment of my invention as a headed stud f, the heads of the stud being sufliciently large in diameter as compared with the space between the jaws to prevent the actuating device from being withdrawn or detached from the said nail-puller.
To prevent the actuating device from becoming detached, I have in this embodiment of my invention, when both jaws are alike, provided each jaw with a like projection 23, the said projections occupying such position with relation each to the other when the jaws are fully closed at their breaks as to obviate the formation of a space or opening of sufticient width to enable the actuating device to pass from between the jaws.
In practice the actuatingdeviee is put into board 9 a small block g, and then with the usual claw of the hammer embracing the edge of the nail-puller, as in Fig. 2, the user will depress the outer end of the hammer-handle and will lift the actuating device so that it, acting upon the cam or inclined surfaces of the jaws, will lift the nail-puller, closing it gradually upon the nail, the latter being pulled out, as will be well understood. The harder the pull on the actuating device the closer the grip of the jaws on the nail.
I claim- 1. The herein-described nail-puller, it consisting, essentially, of two jaws pivoted side by side and having cams or inclines upon their inner sides above their pivotal point,
the inner sides of the jaws overlapping above said cams, and an actuating device intermediate said cams, consisting of the headed stud f, to operate substantially as described.
2. The herein-described nail-puller, it consisting of two jaws pivoted side by side, having their lower ends oifset, as described, and their upper ends flattened, cams upon their inner sides above their pivotal point, the headed stud f, intermediate said cams, to actuate the jaws, and a projection 3 to retain the stud in place, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER E. PETTENGILL.
