UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED STEINER, OF NEWT YORK, N. Y.
LEGGIN-HOLDER.y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,655, dated January 13, 1891.
Application filed July 10,1890. Serial No. 358,248. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom t may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED STEINER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Leggin, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
As ordinarily'made and worn, leggins are not adapted tocover the toes of the wearers feet, and that portion of the leggins which extends forwardly upon the tops of the boots or shoes is liable to curl up and leave a crevice for the introduction of snow, therebycausing wet feet from the melting of the snow, resulting in discomfort as well as liability to disease.
The object of myinvention is to provide a simple, cheap, and eflicient means of securing the front portion of an ordinary leggin upon the toe of a boot or shoe, so that complete protection to the entire foot is afforded and the intrusion of snow prevented and foot kept warm.
To these ends my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the securing device and the method of attaching the same to a leggin on the boot or shoe, as is hereinafter described, and indicated in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the. accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure l represents the foot-covering portion of a leggin in place on a shoe with the holder applied, the leg portion of the leggin being indicated by dotted lines. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detached plan view of the legginholder.
The leggin A, of proper dimensions, is fitted in the usual manner over the boot or shoe B with its lower marginal edge in alignment with the edge of the sole where it joins the upper, and is held in place at the sides next the heel by the usual transverse band e.
While l desire it to be understood that l do not confine myself to the precise form of the leggin-holder C shown, I prefer to construct it in the shape illustratedv in Figs. l and 2. Said holder may be cut or stamped from a comparatively thin sheet of metal or may be cast to shape, as found desirable. It is formed with the oppositely-extending limbs dof any desired width tapering toward their extremities 'and of sufficient length to extend across and slightly beyond the side edges of the sole of the boot or shoe, their extremities being bent over to forni hooks b for engagement with the lower marginal edges of the sides of the leggin A, as shown in Fig. l.
Integral with the limbs a are formed the limbs c, similar to the limbs a, and extending centrally and divergently therefrom to and slightly beyond the edges of the sole of the boot or shoe, their extremities being also bent over to form hooks b for engagement with the lower marginal edge of the leggin A at its toe portion, as also shown in Fig. l.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-'- The combination, with a leggin adapted to cover the top of the foot, of a holder consisting of radiating limbs and hooks on the ends of said limbs, which hooks engage the marginal edge of the foot-covering portion of the leggin, substantially as set forth.
ALFRED STEINER. Vitnesses:
WM. P. PATToN, C. SEDGWICK.
