UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM J. CUSSEN, OF RICHMOND, VIRGINIA.
TOBACCO-=POUCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 444,292, dated January 6, 1891.
Application filed October 22, 1890- Serial No. 368,896. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM J. GUSSEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tobacco -Pouches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved pouch filled; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view thereof; Fig. 3, adetail view of the fastening string or cord.
The invention has particular relation to improvements upon that class of tobaccopouches provided with fastening or closing devices that enable the consumers to refasten them, after portions of their contents have been removed in such a manner that the tobacco remaining in the pouches may be kept in a solid compact mass and in prime condition until entirely consumed.
The present invention relates to the fastening devices of such pouches; and it consists in certain novel features, which will be fully hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim appended.
I wish it understood that I do not claim in this application anything that is covered and claimed in another application filed by me of even (late herewith and numbered serially 868,895.
In the drawings, a designates a pouch or bag of the ordinary construction, except that it has one of its sides extended up asuitable distance beyond the top of the pouch to form a flap a, which is preferably lined with a suitable fabric f. hen the pouch is filled, the flap is folded down over the topof the pouch and serves to cover and seal the same. The bag is filled in the usual manner. Secured in theend of the flap is a metallic eyelet b, into which is inserted a hook b, at tached to the end of a braid or cord 0, the
said hook being rounded or blunted at its end to prevent injury to the bag or to the consumer. The braid or cord is passed around under the bag and up over the top thereof, its free end hanging down over the folded flap. To hold the cord and prevent its slipping when once drawn tight, it is interlaced in a vertical series of eyelets secured in the back or rear side of the bag and its extension or flap. To tighten the string it is simply necessary to draw upon its free end, whereupon it will be drawn tightly around the pouch, holding the contents of the pouch firm and solid in the bottom thereof. To open the pouch, it is simply necessary to loosen the fastening-spring by withdrawing a portion of it from the eyelets, whereupon the hook on the end of the spring may be readily disengaged from its eyelet in the end of the flap.
It is evident that the hook may be attached to the flap and the eyelet secured in the end of the cord in lieu of the arrangement described.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- I A tobacco-pouch provided at its rear side with an extension forming a flap, a vertical series of eyelets secured in the back of this pouch and extension, an eyelet Z), secured in the end of the flap, a cord 0, provided with a hook I) at one of its ends, this hook being removably inserted in the said eyelet b, and the free end of the cord passed around the pouch and fastened by being interlaced in the said series of eyelets, as and for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of witnesses.
XVILLIAM J. OUSSEN.
