UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANCIS J. ROCHE, OF SOMERVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF TWO- THIRDS TO RAYMOND SONIA AND WILLIAM J. BOURQUE, OF SAME PLACE.
BIT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters 'Patent No. 444,161, dated January 6, 1891.
Application tiled August 18 1890.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANCIS J. ROCHE, of Somerville, in the countyof Middlesex, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvementin Bits, of Which the following is a description sufficiently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to Which said invention appertains to make and use the same, refer- Io ence being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved device; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, taken on line @c w in Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a cross-section taken on line y y in Fig. 1.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures of the drawings.
My invention relates especially to a combined bit, screwdriver, gimlet, and reamer; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter fully set forth and claimed, the object being to produce a simple, cheap, and effective article of this character.
The nature of the improvement will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters from the following explanation.
In the drawings, A represents the bit, which 3o is provided with a head b, adapted to be secured in the ordinary stock B in the usual manner. The body of the bit is provided on one face with a longitudinally-arranged undercut groove CZ, and its point at f is flattened to form a screw-driver. A reamer or countersink D is fitted to slide in the groove d, and is adj ustably secured therein by a thumbscrew g. The reaming-tool is chambered longitudinally at h through its cutting end 'L'.
4o Said chamber is adapted to receive thestem of a gimlet-bit C, which is held therein by a set-screw fm.
In the use of my improvement the body or Serial No. 362,279. (No model.)
bit A is secured in the stock B in the usual manner. When employed as a lscrew-driver, the gimlet is incased in the reamer, and said reamer is pushed inward in the groove until Within the driver-point f. The gimlet When projected may be employed in the ordinary manner for boring screw-holes, the reamer 5o acting to countersink the hole in a manner which will be readily understood by all conversant with such lmatters Without a more explicit description. The parts as thus arranged are compact and readily adjusted for use, avoiding the necessity of changing the bits in the stock.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- 1. A screw-driver bit provided longitudi- 6o nally with a groove, incombination with a boring-tool fitted to slide in said groove, and mechanism for securing it therein, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a screw-driver bit 65 provided with a longitudinally arranged groove, With a reamer tted to slide in said groove and chambered longitudinally through its cutting end, and a boringtool detachably secured in said chamber, substantially as de- 7o scribed.
3. A screw-driver bit grooved longitudinally, in combination With a reaming-bit adj ustably secured in said groove and chambered longitudinally, and a gimlet adjustably 7 5 secured in said chamber, substantially as described.
Il. The bit A, provided with the undercut groove d, in combination With the reamer D, having the chamber h, the gimlet C, disposed 8o in said chamber, and the set-screws g m, arranged to operate substantially as described.
' FRANCIS J. ROCHE.
