Description
UNITED STATES PATENT GFFICE.
S. E. BLAKE, OF VORCESIER, MASSACHUSETTS.
i IMPROVEMENT IN TWINE-CUTTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 411,389, (lated September 27, 1864.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, S. E. BLAKE, of Worcester, in the county of forcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Twine-Gutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable any person skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom panying drawings,-making a part of this specification, in Which- Iiigure l is an external view of'my invention; Fig. 2, an under view or an inverted plan of the same; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section of the saine, taken in the line x a', Fig. l.
Similar' letters of reference indicate like parts.
Ihisinvention relates to anew and improved implement or device for cutting twine, designed for the use of retail merchants and others whose business requires the tying up with twine of articles in small packages.
The invention consists in attaching a knife or cutter to a plate or socket by means of a spring and in such a manner that the plate or socket may be directly attached to a counter or any plane surface without any previous preparation of mortising, boring, or any cutting away of the wood-work or iixture whatever.
A represents a plate or socket, which is of convex form at its exterior and has a swell or protuberance sufficient to form a cavity, a, at its inner side to receive a portion of a knife or cutter, B, whichis fitted in or passes through a longitudinal slot, b, in the socket. This knife or cutter is attached to aspring, C, which is secured by a rivet or screw, o, to the inner side of the plate or socket, and has atendency to draw the knife or cutter B as far into or through the slot b as it is allowed to go, the end of the knife being rounded and bearing against one end, o, of the slot b, which serves as a stop for the same, as shown in Fig. 3.
The spring C, where it is attached to the inner side ot' the plate A, is let into the same so as to be ush with the inner surface of the saine, or rather with aflange which winds around the plate or socket, and through'which screws pass to secure the device to the counter or other tixture.
The rounded end of the knife or cutter is not sharp, the cutting-edge heilig within the slot b, and in order to cut the twine the latter is drawn down into the angle between the rounded end ot' the knife and the plate or socket, which causes the former to be forced a tritle outward-the spring C, owing to its pressure on the knife or cutter, causingthe cutting-edge of the latter to sever the twine.
By this arrangement it will be seen that all -that is required in order to adjust the device for use is simply to screw the plate or socket A to the counter or other fixture, no mortising or boring being required, as there are no parts of the device which project beyond the inner edge of the flange d, as is the case with other devices constructed for the saine purpose.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pateut- The combination of the knife or cutter B and spring C, when arranged and applied to the plate or socket A, as shown, to form a new and improved twine-cutter, as set forth.
' S. E. BLAKE.
