M. NELSON. PENDULUM INDIOATOR FOR SIGHTS.
N0.44Z,908. Patented Dec. 16, 1890.
llllllll mum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MAGNUS NELSON, OF TOTTENHAM, CANADAL PENDULUM INDICATOR FOR SIGHTS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,908, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed April 11, 1890. Serial No. 347,530. (No model.)
To aZZ zlzhom it may concern.
Be it known that I, MAGNUS NELSON, of the village of Tottenham, in the county of Simcoe, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Rifle-Sights, of which the following is a specification.
The object of the invention is to'design an attachment which may be readily applied to any style of rifle-sight for the purpose of indicating any rolling or side movement of the rifle-barrel; and it consists, essentially, of a small pendulum suspended in the rifle-sight, the arm of the pendulum passing through a narrow vertical slot in such a manner that any slight rolling movement of the barrel will cause the arm of the pendulum to strike the side of the slot, thereby preventing the vibratory movement which it has when the pendulum-arm is perfectly plumb.
The figure is a view of a peep-sight with my invention applied.
In the drawing, A represents a block fitted into the groove made to receive the peepsight B.
C is the arm of the pendulum, and D its weight. It will be observed that the arm 0 passes through a narrow vertical slot made in the block A and is connected at its upper end to the block A, the said connection being such as will permit the free vibratory movement of the pendulum.
When taking aim, the rifieman has merely to keep an eye on the pendulum or plumb, made as described, and adjust his rifle sidewise, so that the pendulum shall be entirely clear of the sides of the slot, which will be indicated to him by the fact thatthe pendulum or plumb will in that condition have a slight vibratory or trembling movement, which movement will be immediatelyarrested should the rifle-barrel be rolled in the slightest degree.
I have chosen an ordinary peep-sight for the purpose of illustrating my invention; but it will of course be understood that it is applicable to all kinds of sights.
What I claim as my invent-ion is- A small pendulum or plumb suspended in the rifle-sight, the arm of the pendulum or plumb passing through a narrow vertical slot in such a manner that any slight rolling movement of the barrel will cause the arm of the pendulum to strike the side of the slot, and thereby prevent the vibratory movement which it has when the pendulum-arm is perfectly plumb, substantially as specified.
Toronto, March 5, 1890.
MAGNUS NELSON.
In presence of CHARLES C. BALD\VIN, E. CUMMINGS.
