0. 1:". WEGENER, ORNAME'NTAL NAIL HEAD.
No. 442,838. r Patented Dec. 1 6. 1890.
N WITNESSES: lA/VE/VTOH 4M 02:21am; encn ATTORNEY NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OTTO E. WEGENER, OF SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
ORNAMENTAL NAIL-HEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 442,888, dated December 16, 1890.
Application filed June 3, 1890. Serial No. 854,117- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, OTTO F. "EGENER, of
Seattle, in the county of King and State of Vashington, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ornamental Hangers, of which the following is a specification. My invention is an improvement in ornamental hangers, which may be employed or used as picture-nails, nails or screws for supporting brackets and the like against the wall, or in other manner or for other purposes, as may be desired.
The invention consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of the improved hanger, the cap being shown in section. Fig.2 is a detail end view of the body part. Fig. 3 is a perspective View of the cap, and Fig. 4 is a detail view of the bodypiece of the hanger.
The hanger consists, as shown, of a bodyA and the cap B. The body A is formed with a shank 0, preferably screw-threaded, as shown, the head D, which is threaded on its rim or periphery, and the extension E, adapted to receive the strokes of a hammer, and preferablyperforated at e to receive the point of any suitable instrument so that the screw-shank may be turned into the wood. The head D forms at the end of the shank C a shoulder at right angles to the shank, which, when the hanger is used for securing a bracket or the like, clamps such bracket firmly against the wall or other support, so that the said bracket exerts no strain or outward pressure whatever on the removable screw-cap. The same is true in the use of the hanger as a picturenail, the outward stress of the cord or wire looped over the shank being borne by the shoulder at the inner end of the head D. This head D is, as stated, threaded on its rim, this threading being effected to enable the application of the cap B, so that the latter may be removed when so desired.
To avoid any jamming or injury to the thread on head D in hammering the hanger in starting the same, or in driving it in when the shank is made in the form of a nail or spike that is unthreaded, I provide the extension E, which is preferably in the form of a rib and forms a convenient surface to receive the hammer-strokes, so that the latter will not damage the screw-threads of head D. By preference the ends of the rib-extension do not extend to the edge of head D, but terminate short thereof to more certainly avoid damaging the thread of head D. This extension E is perforated at c to receive the point of a nail or other suitable instrument, by which the screw-shank may be conveniently turned into or out of the wall or other construction to which the hanger may be applied. The cap B is threaded internally and is adapted to fit over the extension E and thread into and out of connection with the head D.
This head forms a cover for the end of the hanger and may be decorated or ornamented in any desired manner.
Having thus described my invention, what.
I claim as new is- The improved hanger herein described, consisting of the body A, formed with shank 0,
head D, forming a stop-shoulder and having threads upon its rim or periphery, and pro-- vided with an extensionE, having an opening 6, and the threaded cap B, adapted to fit over the extension E and to thread on the head D, all substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
