SUS PENDING DEVICE FOR PAILS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 441,187, dated November 25, 1890.

Be it known that I, GEORGE O. MUESSEL, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspending De vices for Pails; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating my invention, showing a suspended pail partly withdrawn from beneath the shelf or counter. Fig. 2 is a detail top view of the movable section of the frame. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view thereof. Fig. 4 is a detail plan view of the stationary section of the casting or hanger. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view thereof on line so at, Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a sectional view of the device closed with the pail attached and without the moistening device.

This invention is an improved device for suspending boxes, crates, pails, &c., or other packages containing articles to be sold and from which it is not desirable to remove the articles except as sold-such as tobacco, fruits, &c.beneath a shelf or counter in such manner that they can be readily drawn out when desired to take articles therefrom, and then pushed back beneath the shelf, which forms a cover therefor, and, further, to provide novel devices for indicating the goods contained in the package, and whereby the condition of the air in the packages when suspended and closedcan be regulated; and to these ends the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter clearly described and claimed.

In the drawings the device is represented as constructed for suspending cylindrical pails or buckets of tobacco, and will be so described; but I do not confine myself to a construction adapted only for suspending cylindrical packages, as the shape of the parts can be obviously altered to suitthe kind of pack age to be suspended.

Referring to the drawings by letters, A represents a metallic frame, having parallel sides, from which depend longitudinally-grooved flanges a a or slideways, and which is provided Serial No. 347,214. (No model.)

with a number of openings, through which screws can be passed to secure it in position to the under side of a counter-top or shelf.

B is an annular casting, having a depend-,

thereupon, while permitting it to be slid back and forth thereunder. The front of the casting has a projecting finger-piece c, by which it can be operated. The depending flange b of the casting is adapted to fit over the edge of a pail or bucketP after the top thereof has been removed, and by adjusting screws 0 O the casting is attached to the bucket, or vice versa, and the latter is thereby suspended below the counter, as indicated. When pushed beneath the shelf, the latter forms a cover for the pail and protects the contents thereof. Other means for suspending the packages from casting B might be substituted for the setscrews without departing from the invention.

H designates an inwardly-projecting arm, formed with casting B and projecting from the rear edge thereof intermediate wings I) D, its extremity being at about the center of the casting, and it has apair of perforated ears 7:. and an opening vi at its extremity, as shown.

I is a spring attached to the lower face of the arm and having an upstanding bend projecting through opening 1' and forming a catch which engages the front edge of frame A and prevents the casual entire withdrawal of casting B therefrom but when necessary the catch can be depressed to permit the casting to be removed.

M designates a plate, havin g perforated ears m m on one edge, by which it is hinged to the end of arm H by a pin N, passing through the ears m and h, and O is a coiled spring slipped on the pin between the ears, as shown, and

having its extremities bearing against the arm t ICO of goods in the package, and on its inner face may be secured an absorbing-padding o,which can be saturated with water, flavoring, or disinfecting chemicals, 850., which will have a beneficial efiect on the air and contents of the package when the same is closed by pushing it beneath the shelf. WVhere tobacco-pails are thus suspended, if the pad be saturated with Water it will keep the air in the pail moist while closed, and thus preserve the contents in a better condition. Saturating the pad with disinfectants and insecticides will prevent germination of spores and drive off insects.

Having thus described my invention, I claim- 1. In a suspending device for pails, the combination of a sliding movable section provided with devices for suspending a package or pail therefrom with the fixed grooved supports or slideways for the movable section, substantially as described.

2. The combination of the slideways secured to the under side of a shelf or counter-top with a movable section having wings engaging said slideways and devices for suspending a pail therefrom, substantially as set forth.

3. The combination of the slideways with a casting having lateral wings engaging said slideways, a spring-catch for limiting its move- 'ment, and devices for suspending a pail therefrom, substantially as described.

4. The combination of the slideways with a casting having lateral wings engaging the slideways and an intermediate arm and a plate hinged to said arm, and devices for sus- 3 5 pending a pail or package from the casting, substantially as set forth.

5. The combination of the slideways with a casting supported thereby, having a forwardly-projectingarm,aspring-catch attached 40 to said arm and a spring-controlled plate hinged thereto, and means for attaching and suspending a pail to said casting, substantially as set forth.

6. The combination of the frame provided with grooved flanges at its sides with the casting having lateral wings engaging the grooves of said flanges, a depending flange and means for attaching a pail or package thereto, and a spring-catch for limiting the outward movement of the casting, substantially as described.

7. The combination of the frame having depending lateral grooved flangeswith the cast ings having lateral wings engaging said flanges, an intermediate arm, a spring-catch and a hinged plate attached to said arm, and a depending flange, and the devices for attaching and suspending a pail or package therefrom, substantially as and for the pur- 6o pose set forth.
