M. G. MERRITT. TYPE BAR AND HANGER FOR TYPE WRITING MACHINES. No. 440,574.
Patented Nov. 11, 18 90.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
MORTIMER G. MERRITT, OF SPRINGFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
TYPE-BAR AN D HANG ER FOR TYPE-WRITl NG MACH I N ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 440,574, dated November 11, 1890.
Application filed August 4, 1890. Serial No. 360,906. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORTIMER G. MERRITT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Springfield, in the county of l-lampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Type-Bars and Hangers for Type-VVriting Machines, of which the following is a specification;
This invention relates to improvements in type bars or levers of type-writing machines and hangers therefor, the invention particularly relating to means for insuring the hanging of the type-bar from the hanger and for taking up any wear in the connection and bearing; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be set forth in the claims.
Reference is hereby had to the accompany ing drawings, forming part of this specification, in which a typehar and hanger constructed in accordance with this invention are illustrated.
Figure 1 is a side view thereof, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of same, both of said views being on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a crosssection on the line so 00, on a still further enlarged scale; and Fig. 4 is a view in detail of the adjusting-screw employed in the connection.
In the drawings, A represents the type'bar hanger of any well-known or approved construction, and which is provided with the two separated leaves or members a a, both of which have the perforations or sockets b 6 near their outer extremities, which are in transverse alignment, it being noted that the said sockets b are outwardly tapering. The hub (Z of the type-bar B has laterally-extendin g bosses 4 f f which have a supporting and bearing engagement with the sockets of said hanger members. I
Now, so far as concerns what has been last above stated, it is not intended to be hereby understood that I broadly claim inter-emgaging bosses and sockets on the type-bar and hanger members to be new with me; but it will be noticed that one of the bosses f of the hub is formed by the outer extremity of a short stud g, which closely fits but is freely movable in a socket e in the hub d, said stud being axially aligned with the boss fat the other side of the type-bar hub, and there is an opening j bored through the hub of the type-bar transversely to and intersecting the said socket e, there being provided in said opening j a screw h, having an engagement with the walls of the opening by one portion thereof, and by its inner extremity Z, which is formed tapered, it has a bearing upon the inner end of the stud g. By turning the screw 71, whereby it is moved inwardly within the openingj, the expanding portion of the tapered part Z is moved to exert a forcing action upon the said stud g, forcing the same outwardly and altering the distance between the tapered bossesf and f, and, as will readily be seen without further explanation, the bearing between the bosses and hangers may be readily adjusted, wear being easily taken up from time to time, as occasion may require.
It is preferred, substantially as shown in the drawings, to form both the movable stud and socket e of a length to traversea considerable portion of the width of the typebar hub, whereby the stud, with its long bearing in the socket, is with greater security maintained as one with and a part of the type-bar, there being incidental to such construction little or no liability of the stud becoming lost.
hat I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination, the type-bar and a typebar hanger, the latter having two opposing members provided with tapered sockets b b, and the former provided with tapered bosses f and f, one of the latter being formed on the outer end of a stud which is movable in a direction across the type-bar and supportedin a socket which is formed therein, and a screw h, working in an opening j transversely to the axis of said bosses and provided with a tapered extremity which has a bearing upon the inner end of said stud, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. A type-bar having at one side thereof a boss or trunnion and at the other side thereof a socket, and a stud movable therein having a tapered extremity, and an opening through the type-bar which intersects said socket, and a screw entering said opening and engaging the wall thereof and provided with a tapered inner extremity which has a forcing action upon the inner end of said stud, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
MORTIMER G. MERRITT. Witnesses:
C. A. BRIGHAM, II. A. CHAPIN.
