Description
(No Model.)
J. B. HUTGHISON. GONDBNSER EOE STEAM ENGINES.
No. 439,664. Patented Nov. 4, 1890.
ATTEST INVENTOR.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES BAXTER HUTOHISON, OF BUTTE CITY, MONTANA.
CONDENSER FOR STEAM-ENGINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,664, dated November 4, 1890.
Application filed May 29, 1890- Serial No. 353,655. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES BAXTER HUTOHI- soN, a citizen of the United States of America,
I I esiding at Butte City, in the county of Silver g Mow and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condensers for Steam-Engines, of which the following 1s a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
The nature and obj ect of my invention consist in exhausting the steam from the steamcylinder into the suction or supply pipe of the pump and in providing such supply-pipe with an exhaust-nozzle connected with the exhaust-pipe, and in the utilization of the steam from the exhaust-pipe to assist in raising water in the supply-pipe. I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which the figure is a side elevation of my device, the nozzle-joint being shown partly in section.
The connections with the engine and pump are shown without letters of reference.
A is the exhaust-pipe leading from the steam-cylinder directed toward the reservoir G at the joint 13 and connected with the nozzle-joint E of the supply-pipe H at the joint 0, leading into the end of the supply-pipe II at its end most remote from the pump beneath the surface of the water in the reservoir G. The nozzle-joint E of the supplypipe H is enlarged and perforated to admit the in flow of water. Projecting inwardly from its end is the exhaust-nozzle E, which may be cast integrally therewith, being gradually reduced in diameter, forming the orifice of escape, so as to secure pressure of the steam and project it into the water running into the supply-pipe toward the pump. The effect of this construction and arrangement of parts is to assist the lifting of water by pressure of the steam, and at the same time give abetter vacuum than is formed by exhausting into the open air, and also to avoid the inconvenience incident to exhaust-steam in a confined space.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In combination with the exhaust-steam pipe A, leading into the extreme end of the supply-pipe of the pump beneath the surface of the water and having the enlarged perforated nozzle E, and the inwardly-projecting exhaust-nozzle F, gradually reduced in its diameter at the orifice of escape, as and for the purposes described and shown.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES BAXTER IIUTOI-IISON.
