'PAWL-AND-RATCHET MECHANISM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 439,612, dated October 28, 1890.
Application filed May 10,1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. TALLER- DAY, a citizen of the United States,residing at Harvard, in the county of McI-Ienry and the State of lllinois,have inven tedcertain new and useful Improvements in Pawl-and-Ratchet Mechanisms, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is shown and described in connection with other devices in a pending application filed in the United States Patent Office October 1,1888, Serial No. 286,935, but is not therein claimed.
The invention relates to mechanism consisting, essentially, of a ratchet-wheel, a detent adapted to engage with and prevent the same from revolving in one direction, a pallet arranged to engage with the ratchet-wheel and revolve the same in a direction opposite to that prevented by the detent, a driving-arm whereon the pallet is mounted and whereby it is operated, and suitable means for operatively connecting said parts together.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improvement in working order, except that the driving-arm is broken away to better show the interior construction thereof. Fig. 2 is alike view of the same with the detent and pallet disengaged from the ratchet-wheel. Fig. 3 is an under side view of the more intricate parts of the machine in operative posit-ion and relation. Fig. 4 is a back side view of the pallet and the middle portion of the driving-arm and their connections. Fig. 5 is an enlarged side elevation of the machine having the front parts thereof removed and showing the interior parts in detail.

A is the base-plate of my machine.
B is a ratchet-wheel, mounted upon the axlebolt B, the inner end whereof is threaded and turned into the re enforced threaded opening A in the plate A.
O is a longitudinally-reciprocating detent adapted to engage endwise with the interdental spaces B between the teeth B of the ratchet-wheel B to prevent the same from revolving in one direction and mounted in of the slideway and cap D D? Serial No. 310,339. (No model.)

E is a longitudinally reciprocating bar mounted in the slideways D D and serving intermediately to connect the detent C with a pallet, to be described hereinafter.
E is a cross-piece integral or rigidly con-" nected with the barE and curved, preferably," in the form of a segment of a circle, to serve as a guide for a part to be described hereinafter.
E is a stud projecting transversely and horizontally from the outside of the bar E.
F is a lever engaging with the stud F. for simultaneously disengaging the detent O and pallet, to be described, from the ratchet-wheel B, if desired, and is mounted on the pivot F.
G is a bearing-plate from which project the pallet-bearings G G G is a longitudinally-laterally-reciprocatin g pallet adapted to engage with the interdental spaces B in the periphery of the ratchetwheel B and revolve the same in a direction opposite to that prevented by the detent O.
G is a stud projecting from the inside of the pallet G G is apallet-actuat-ing spring coiled about the pallet G and included between the bearing G and stud G*.
H is a vertically-reciprocating driving-arm whereto the bearing-plate G is secured, pivotally connected with the bolt B.
It will often happen that the driving-arm II, and the parts located thereon, will be in operation while the detent O and pallet G are disengaged from the ratchet-wheel B, as is the case when the mechanism is employed to regulate intermittent pumping of water by windmills.
Fig. 1 shows the machine with all its parts in operative position and relation, and if the driving-arm Hbe there vertically reciprocated the ratchet-wheel B will be driven in the direction indicated by the curved arrow.
Fig. 2 shows the ratchet-wheel B disconnected from the driving-arm H, which may continue to reciprocate or not, as circunr stances may dictate, doing no work until the detent C and pallet G are caused to re-engage with the ratchet-wheel B. The herein-described mechanism will be found to be highly convenient and useful where a pawl and ratchetis required alone or in connection with other devices.
I claim as my invention- 1. I11 combination, the ratchet-Wheel, the detent adapted to engage with and stop the same, the pallet arranged to engage with and revolve said ratchet-wheel, the segmental sliding reciprocatory cross-piece E, immediately connecting the detent and pallet, means for op erating said cross-piece and connections, and the necessary bearings for supporting and operating all of said parts, substantially as set forth.
2. In c0mbination,a ratchet-wheel,adetent adapted to engage with and prevent the same from revolving in one direction, a pallet arranged to engage with said ratchet-wheel and revolve the same in a direction opposite to that prevented by said detent, a verticallyreciprocating driving-arm whereon the said pallet is mounted and whereby it is operated, a bar connecting said det-ent and pallet, and
a lever for operating said bar and connections, substantially as described and for the purpose specified.
3. In combination, a ratchet-wheel, a longitudinally-reciprocating detent adapted to engage with and prevent the same from revolving in one direction, a longitudinally-vertically-reciprocating pallet arranged to engage with and revolve said ratchet-wheel in a direction opposite to that prevented by said detent, a vertically-reciprocating arm whereon said pallet is mounted and whereby it is operated, a lon gitudinall y-reciprocatin g bar connecting said detent and pallet,a lever for op erating said bar and the parts connected therewith, and a suitable base-plate and proper bearings for uniting and supporting all of said parts in operative position and relation, substantially as specified, and for the purpose set forth.
