To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HENRY S. BRINK, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Biggs, in the county of Butte and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cultivators.

The object of the invention is to provide a cultivator especially adapted to cultivate the ground in orchards; and it consists in the construction and combination of the parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a cultivator constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the supporting-axle. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one of the standards or cultivating-blades detached. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a weed-cutter, which may be applied to the frame.

A refers to the cultivator-frame, which consists of converging beams B and cross-braces c 0, upon which braces the pole Ais secured. The rear end of the pole is provided with a seat for the driver and with a ratchet bar or segment, with which a pawl attached to a hand-lever may en gage for holding the crankaXle D when adjusted. This crank-axle is mounted in suitable bearings attached to the under side of the beams B B, and the bent ends thereof are provided with rectangular openings, in which the ends of spindles Gare placed, so that said spindles can be readily removed when Worn out. The supporting- Wheels are mounted upon these spindles G and can be raised and lowered by simply moving the lever, which is rigidly attached to the crank-axle, and it will be noted that when the crank-axle is turned to lower the wheels the frame will be elevated.

The cultivator blades or shanks are made with shoulders h, above which are rectangular portions which pass through openings 1n the beams B B and are secured thereto by nuts. The lower portion of these cultivatorblades have sharp edges, while they are wedge-shaped in cross-section, and at their lower ends have forwardly-projecting points with perforations or bolt-holes 2, over which points shovels I are adapted to be secured.

In some instances I prefer to attach to the front portion of the frame A, instead of the shovels I, a wedge-shaped cutter J, which carries rearwardly and upwardly projecting fingers j, which device will cut the weeds, and they will be carried by the fingers 7, which project above the ground.

This device is intended especially for cultivating the ground in orchards where it is desired to simply stir the ground to loosen the same and permit access of air thereto without otherwise disarranging the natural position of the soil, and for this purpose the shovels or points I are placed in almost a horizontal position, so that they will simply loosen the ground and not turn it, while the wedge-shaped knives or shanks II will open up the ground from the shovels to the top.

By the construction of this device and mounting the wheels at a suitable distance ahead of the rear of the frame the machine may be driven much closer to the trees, and the rear shovels, being on a line with the wheels, will loosen up the ground compressed thereby.

I claim- 1. In a cultivator for the purpose set forth, the combination, with the main frame having rearwardly-diverging bars connected by cross-braces, and longitudinal pole A, carrying segmental rack, of the axle mounted in bearings carried by said bars and having its integral portions beyond said bars bent at right angles and provided with square open- In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
