MOUNT FOR PHOTOGRAPHS OR OTHER PICTURES.
SIPECIFIGATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 437,949, dated October 7, 1890.
Application filed September 30, 1889. Serial No. 325.492. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD H. L. TALCOTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Sufiolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mounts for Photographs or other Pictures, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to mounts for photo graphs or other pictures, the object thereof being principally to provide appliances whereby pictures mounted on glass may be inclosed at their back and edges and to be capable of withdrawal and substitution at will without impairing the durability or appearance of the mounting appliance.
An object of the invention may otherwise be stated to be the provision of a mount for photographs and the like having many of the advantageous characteristics of the one described in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me March 23, 1886, No. 338,651, but which mounting appliances, owing to the construction thereof, may be supplied in quantities to users, rendering the work necessary to make the combination therewith of the picture very slight and easy of accomplishment by unskilled persons; and the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts, all as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be set forth in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figures 1, 2, and 3 are views in perspective of the parts of the inclosing-casing for the picture-glass separated, and also of the picture-glass. The part illustrated in Fig. 2 shows the rear side foremost. Fig. at is a crosssection of the mounted picture. Fig. 5 is a rear view of the mounting appliances placed and confined together. Fig. 6 is a central longitudinal section of the mounted picture. Fig. 7 is a front perspective view of the mounted picture, illustrating merely the general appearance thereof; and Fig. 8 is a sectional view similar to Fig. 6, but of a construction wherein, however, a somewhat more efficient mounting of the picture is insured at little greater labor.
The mounting appliances, according to this be integrally formed; but it is preferred to t form the back of a semi-rigid material such as firm card or paste board-and to'form the edge pieces of a bowed or U form, (the cross- 7 sectional contour of which is varying, according as to whether glass with its edge beveled or otherwise formed is employed,) and to se cure them by their one side section to the said back piece by gluing, riveting, or by both, or otherwise.
The mounting appliance, according to this invention, also consists in a removable cap O, of sheet metal or other suitable material, comprising the portion d, (see Fig. 2,) of bowed or U shape in cross-section, to overlie the end portion of the back piece, and to also overlie the edge of the picture-glass when in place, and said cap also comprises at its ends turnedover lips f f to overlie the turned-over lips affixed to the sides of the main holder part.
A suitable catch device is to be applied between the back of the main holderpart and the removable cap-section, whereby when the picture has been inserted the cap will be effectually held in its place, and at 00, Figs. 5, 6, and 8, one form of catch device is shown, which consists of forming on or affixing to the cap-section an eye g and providing on the back A, near the open edge thereof, apivoted hooked arm 71- to swing into and out of engagemeiit with said eye, or instead of this very common form of catch device other wellknown or approved securing devices may be employed, and in large mounts more than one should be used.
A leg E is to be affixed to the back and holder portion, by which the mounted picture maybe maintained in an upright posi tion.
On desiring to remove the glass-plate 13 (having a picture thereon and visible at the front) from the mount, the catch device for the cap-section is released, and on removing said cap-section the picture-glass may be withdrawn and a new one substituted therefor.
In Fig. 8 is represented the picture-sheet secured to the glass, bound all around the edge with strips m, of suitable impervious material, as cloth or leather, and by the provision of the said strips the picture is more effectually guarded against air and moisture and may be readily placed in the improved holder.
WVhat I claim is- Y 1. Apicture-mountingappliance consisting of a main holder portion, comprising a back plate having an area corresponding to that of the picture to be mounted and having overturned lip portions on three of its edges and a removable cap portion rigidly aifixed thereto, consisting of a U-shaped strip, also having at its ends angularly-extended U- shaped lip-continuations adapted to overlie the open extremity of said holder portion, and means, substantially as described, for confining the removable cap in place, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. Apicture-mounting appliance consisting of a main holder portion, comprising a back 30 plate of semi-rigid material having an area corresponding to the picture to be mounted, provided with the metallic strips of U shape in cross-section securely affixed to three of the edges of said back plate, formingabounding groove for said edges, and also provided with a hinged leg, and a removable cap portion consisting of a U-shaped strip, also having at its ends angularly-extended U-shaped lipcontinuations adapted to overlie the open extremity of said holder portion, and means, substantially as described, for confining the removable cap in place, substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
' 3. The combination,witl1 the holder portion comprising a back having substantially the area of the picture to be mounted, and havi'ng overturned metallic lip portions rigidly affixed thereto on three of its edges, of a plate of glass having a picture cemented to its back and bound at its edges with impervious material, the removable cap portion, as described, and a catch device applied on and between said main holder and said removable cap portion, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
