Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES IERLEY, CF NEW YORK, N. Y.
CLASP FOR. BANK-BILLS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 43,792, dated August 9, 1864.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES PERLEY, of the city, county, and State ot' New York, have invented, made, and applied to use a new and useful Improvement in Clasps or Files for Bundles of Bank-Bills, Ste.; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part ot' this specificationz wherein- Figure l is a side view of my said clasp. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, showing' the manner in which it is secured together. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the clasp as open to receive bank-bills or whatever may be desired to be placed therein.
Similar marks of reference denote the same pirts.
It has been usual before my invention, when lbanlrbills or papers are filed or bundled to secure the same by india-rubber bands or by strips ot' paper wrapped around and secured by sticking a pin through the same. Said india-rubber band soon loses its elasticity and becomes rotten and useless and the pins used to secure bundles ot' bank-bills def-ace the same, and there is more or less difficulty in catch or lock, the one shown and described being preferred.
' In the drawings, a is a strip of spring metal bent in a U form. .b b are spring-catches bent at right angles to the same and formed as tongues, and c c are grooves or cuts to receive said tongues when sprung together by the hand. It will be seen that it is only neeessary to press the Utorm clasp together in order that the rounded portions l l of the tongues shall give a sidewise movement to the ends of the spring as the parts come in contact; thereby one tongue slips over the other and enters its groove, springing down into the same and securing the clasp around a bundle of bills or papers entered within the same.
When it is desired to withdraw bills or papers inclosed within said clasp or le, it may be eti'ected by drawing them out without unclasping the same; and in order to unelasp this device, it is simply necessary to spring the clasp edgewise when the parts will disconnect.
Figures to ldenote the amount of bills contained in said tile or any desired lettering mayr be engraved or otherwise applied to the same.
Having thus'described my said invention, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A metallic spring clasp or tile for bankbills, Ste., held together in substantially the manner described and shown.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my signature this 3d day ot' May, 1864.
CHARLES PERLEY.
Witnesses Tnos. GEo. HAROLD, CHAs. H. SMITH.
