Description

I (No Rudel.) l J. H. GARRETT.
SASH. I'ASTEBTEIIt.`
No.4 437,190. Patented Sept. 30, 1890.
76 elw/MQ M6 om i @Houmt 1 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. GARRETT, OF KINGS MOUNTAIN, NORTH CAROLINA.
SASH-FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 437,190, dated September 30, 1890.
Application filed August 12, 1890.
To @ZZ whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. GAREETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at'Kings Mountain, in the county of Gaston and State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Sash Holder and Lock; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure l of the drawings represents a front view of a portion of a window-frame and sash, showing the application of my invention thereto; Fig. 2, a vertical section thereof; and Fig. 3, a detail view in perspective of a portion of the windowframe and sash, on an enlarged scale, with my invention applied thereto.
The present invention has for its object to provide a device that will be effective in its purpose to lock a window-sash in a closed or open position, serving both as a holder for the sash and a lock, and one that is easyof operation and positive in its action, which objects are attained by the construction substantially as shown in the drawings, and hereinafter described and claimed.
Inthe accompanying drawings, Arepresents the window-frame, and B C the upper and lower sashes, respectively, which are of the usual construction. To the vlower sash C, upon one side thereof, are suitably fastened any desired number of buttons D, which have inclined bearing-faces a, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
To the side of the window-frame A is pivoted the combined holder and lock, which retain their normal position by gravity and are both pivoted on a common center and act in conjunction with each other.
The holder is represented at E and the lock at F, and are pivoted together and to the window-frame by the pivot b, the holder coming next to the window-frame andthelock next to the holder, one working upon the other.
The holder E has an inclined seat c, against which the inclined bearing-edge d of the lock F cornes in contact, so as to limit the extent to which it would come wit-h relation to the holder when in a position to lock the sash, as shown in Fig. 2. The lock F has a shoulder e and a thumb-piece ffor operating it, and the holder E has an inclined shoulder gto Serial No. 361.808. (No model.)
correspond with the incline on the buttons D, and the lower portion of the holder curves downwardly and outwardly, as shown at h. This constitutes the peculiar construction of both the holder and lock, and they act in conjunction with each other to hold and lock the sash open or closed.
vWhen it is desired to lock the sash closed, the device is engaged with the upper one of the buttons D, as shown in Fig. 2, and to raise the sash and hold it to its raised position the lock F is pulled out, as shown in dotted lines, Fig. 2, to release the shoulder e from engagement with the button D. Now the sash can be raised without any trouble, and owing to the bevel h von the holder E, when the buttons D come in contact therewith the holder will be forced outward sufficiently to allow the button to pass up beyond the shoulder g. When the sash is raised to the desired height, the button im mediateiy above the shoulder g will be supported thereby, and by releasing the lock F it will, by gravity, assume the position as shown in Fig. 2, forming a lock both above and below the button, and the greater the pressure upon the inclined shoulder g by the button and weight of the sash the more securely the sash will be held. The saine may be said of the sash when any attempt is made to raise it from the outside. The greater the pressure upward against the shoulder c the more firm the sash will be held.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a sash holder and lock, the gravity holder e, cast with the seat c upon its outer side, and the shoulder g, in combination with the lock F, cast with bearing-edge to actin connection with the seat on the holder and having the shoulder e, said shoulders of both the lock and holder when in position forming together a recess to engage the button on the sash, and the lock and holder being pivoted together and to the window-frame at their upper ends by one and the same pivot, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. GARRE'IT.`
