GEORGE WM. SAMPLE, on YORK, PENNSYLVANIA.
SOAP-CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,195, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed February 12, 1890 Serial No. 340,151. (No model.)
Trimming Soap; and I do declare the following I to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in soap-cutters; and it has for its object to provide a device of this character for the use of retail dealers in cutting bar-soap into smaller pieces or for soap manufacturers in cutting up bars of toilet-soap previous to stamping the same into cakes.
The invention further consists of means for trimming or beveling the edges of the smaller cakes, so as to remove any chipped portions and to make the cake more attractive in appearance.
The invent-ion further consists of certain details of construction and combination of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and then pointed out in the claims.
Figure .1 of the drawings is a perspective View of a soap-cutter constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 isa sectional view through the edge-trimming device. Fig. 3 is a sectional view through the base to show the transverse groove therein.
The box or soap-holder A is composed of a base-piece B, along one edge of which is securedaside C. This side extends slightly 'below the base-piece, as shown, to form a flange 0 to hold the box in position against the edge of a table.
A narrow slot D is cut down the side 0 to a point slightly below the face of the base B, where it connects with a narrow groove E, cut across the face of the base.
A. wire F, secured at one end to the base adjacent the groove E and provided at its free end with a handle G, is designed to pass through slot D and under a grooved pulley H,
secured on the outer face of the side'Gof'the box by means of a bracket I.
A graduated scale J is marked upon the face of the base B of the box from the groove E toward the endany desired distance. This scale is to aid the operator in cutting a cake of any desired thickness or insuring the same any chipped portions or to render the cake.
more attractive in appearance I employ the following means: In the end of the base-piece is cut the preferably rectangular notch K, over which is secured a metal plate L, having a knife-edge Z. Extending from this notch and parallel with the edge of the base is a preferably V-shaped groove M, enlarged at the point of entrance to the notch K, for a purpose hereinafter described.
To cut the soap a bar is placed within the box, its end resting on the scale at theproper number designating the thickness of the cake to be cut. The wire F is now passed over the soap through the slot D and thence down under the pulley. Now by grasping the handle G and pulling upon the wire the latter cuts its way through the soap and sinks within the groove E, thus insuring a clean out of the soap. The edges of the smaller cakesthus out are now placed within the V- shaped groove M and forced against the knifeedge of plate L, which neatly bevels the edges and removes any chipped portions. The shavings of soap made in this operation are conveyed through the enlarged portion of the groove M into the notch K, where they accumulate and can be removed at will and saved.
Although I have described the box orsoapholder A as being formed of two pieces, it is evident it may be cast of a single piece without departing from the spirit of my invention, and so, also, may changes be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having described my invention and set forth its merits, what I claim, and desire to.
secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The'combination, with the base provided with a graduated scale and the upright side to said base, formed with a vertical slot, of the wire secured to said base at a point opposite to said side and in line with the slot therein and a bearing for said wire to move over, located adjacent to the plane of the base and outside of the slotted side, said wire being passed through said slot and thence under said bearing, which serves as a fulcrum therefor, whereby by drawing upon the wire it will be drawn down through the soap to be cut, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a soap-cutter, the combination with the base and side arranged at an angle to each other, with the side formed with a slot there- 111,61 the wire secured at the end adjacent to the other edge of the base and opposite to the slot in the side and the sheave supported by a bracket on the outer face of the side adjacent to the slot therein for the wire to pass around,substantia1ly as and for the purposes set forth.
3. In a soap-cutter, the combination, with the base having a groove in its face and the side formed with a slot and set at an angle to the base, one of said parts having a scale, of a Wire connected at one end to the base and entering the slot in the side, a bearing for said wire secured to the outer face of the side adjacent to the lower end of the groove therein, and the flange projecting below the under side of the base adjacent to said side, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
