JOHN H. MEAD, OF CONCORD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
BAND-SAW GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 436,143, dated September 9, 1890.
Application filed October 2, 1889,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN H. MEAD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Concord, in the county of Merrimac and State of New Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Band-Saw Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to guides for bandsaws, the object of the invention being to provide a back-restfor asaw, which may be readily adjusted as it becomes worn, from time to time, so as to always maintain its proper position relative to the saw.
The invention consists, essentially, of a beveled wheel so combined wit-h the ordinary vertical guides as to permit the angular periphery of the wheel to bear against and support the back of a saw, all of which is fully set forth in the following specification and claims, and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming an inseparable part thereof, of which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the ordinary guide attachment, to which my improvements are applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of same. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the improved attachment, to which is applied an improved frame for carrying the wooden guides; and Fig. 4 is a front elevation of the same parts.
A is a section of a saw, and B B are the vertical guides, which are usually made of wood, and secured by screws 0 to a casting D, connected by screws E to a flange f, forming part of a horizontal spindle F, mounted in a coupling G, supported upon a vertical rod H depending from a convenient part of the saw-frame, which is not shown in the drawings. The casting D is provided upon one side with a vertical disk (1, formed on an angle of forty-five degrees, or thereabout, which is chambered at t to receive the circular beveled back-rest I, as shown in Fig. 2, and at the opposite side of said disk is formed a boss (1 formed at right angles with said disk, and in. which is formed a socket 61 which serves as a bearing for the journale' of the back-rest I. The end of this journale' may be countersunk, and a set-screw J, fitting a threaded opening in the end of the boss 01 may have its end turned off tapering, so as to fit into the end of said journal, if de- Serial No- 325,'798. (No model.)
may be again adjusted so as to move said wheel farther out and against the saw, which restores perfect action.
A check-nut J may be placed upon the screw J, as shown in the drawings, and thus avoid the accidental loosening of said screw by the rotative motion of the back-rest and its journal.
The vertical guides B B, I prefer to make as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, their outside edges being cut on an incline and fitting within an iron frame B, secured by screws C to the casting D and provided on its front with ears I), in each of which is threaded a screw B which are set hard upon the said guides B. After the latter have been properly adj usted and the said guides become worn they may be lowered as required.
Having described my improvements, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a guide for band-saws, a beveled rotative back-rest having its journal mounted at an angle with the saw, and means, substantially as described, for adjusting said journal longitudinally within its bearing and maintaining continuous contact of the beveled edge of said back-rest with the back of said saw.
2. In a guide for band-saws, arotative backrest having a beveled periphery and mounted at an angle with the saw, and means, substantially as set forth, whereby said beveled periphery shall be kept in contact with the back of said saw and in a position at right angles therewith.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN H. MEAD.
