No. 435,773. Patented Sept. 2. 1890.
WITNESSES," IIVVENTOI? By 167M616". Smith. @ww jg UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISRAEL C. SMITH, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN.
COMBINED FOLDING BED AND DRESSING-CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 435,773, dated September 2, 1890.
Application filed March 31,1890. Serial No. 346,123. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISRAEL (1. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in aCombined Folding Bed and Dressing-Case; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to the construction of a combined folding bed and dressing-case; and my object is to provide a means of connecting a folding bed and a dressing-case or equivalent article to each other in such a manner that the dressing-case shall form a support for the folding section of the folding bed, and the two so constructed, combined, and arranged constitute a new article of manufacture of great utility; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the various parts, as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device embodying my invention, with parts broken away to show various positions of details, and having the positions of some of the parts in certain relations shown in dotted outline. Fig. 2 is a perspective of my combined folding bed and dressing-case partly open.
Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each of the figures.
A represents the stationary or upright casing or section of the folding bed B, the bed or folding section pivoted to A at F, and adapted to open by swinging outward and downward to its horizontal position in the usual manner, and which is provided with a closed portion H, forming the front when closed. The lower portion H of the front is open, for a purpose hereinafter explained, and shows the slats G upon which the bedding rests.
O respresents a dressing case suitably mounted upon casters and adapted to move upon the same freely in various directions. Between the folding section and the dressingcase is placed a rectangular frame D, one end of which is hinged to the dressing-case at E at a suitable distance from the floor, and the other to the folding section at E about halfway between the foot-board and the head. The side bars of the frame D are of such length that when the folding section is horizontal the foot-board and dressing-case will be approximately ad jaccnt, and when conneeted, as set forth, the foot of the bed will be supported upon the dressing-case by the frame connected thereto, as described, and when the folding section is vertical it will be braced in its vertical position both by said frame and by the back of the dressing-case placed against it. It is evident that the end bars of the frame may be dispensed with and the side bars hinged, respectively, to the bed and ease, forming arms connecting the articles; but I prefer to use the frame constructed in the manner described, hinged as shown, and of such thickness that when the folding section is vertical the frame will rest in the open portion of the front below and in a line or flush with the upper or closed portion H, which forms the front of the bed when folded.
I have shown an article of furniture known as a dressing-case, but any equivalent articlesueh as a commode, a book-case, or a wardrobe-may be used in this relation without altering the other parts of the combination, and I do not limit my invention to the articles described.
To operate the device requires only that the dressing-case be drawn forward a suitable distance, when the connecting-frame will draw the folding section outward, and when horizontal it is supported, as shown, and when the folding section is raised to its vertical position the case forms the front of the article and covers the lower portion.
I claim- The combination, with the open stationary section A and the folding bed pivoted at its lower end thereto, said folding bed having a closed portion H and an open portion H, of a movable dressing-case or equivalent article of furniture, and a rectangular frame hinged at one end to said dressing-case or equivalent article of furniture and at its other end I00 to the closed portion of the folding bed eonsition said frame will be received by the open tigu'ous to the open portion thereof, and of portion thereof. 10
