HANDLE FOR TABLE CUTLERY.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,276, dated July 29,1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM T. DECKER, of Rockport, in the county of Carbon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in llandles of Spoons, Forks, and other Articles for Table or other Use, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention, although here only shown as more especially applied 'to the handles of spoons, is equally applicable to the handles of forks, stirrers, mixers, ladles, and other like articles for table, culinary, and other uses.

My invention consists in the construction I5 and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming apart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a View in perspective of a spoon having the guard in one of its forms applied to the handle thereof. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of a similar handle, in part, with my guard in another of its forms applied thereto; and Fig. 3 an inverted plan or under View of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of another form of the guard applied, and Fig. 5 a sectional view of the same on the line 5 5 in Fig. 4.

The guard in each case is in the form of a lip or hook applied to the under side of the handle at a suitable distance from its outer end. More than one of such guards, if de- 3 5 sired, may be used on the same handle. Said guard may either be of a hinged construction, or adjustable and swiveling on the handle, as will be more fully explained by reference to the several figures of the drawings.

A indicates the handle of the spoon, fork, or other article to which the guard B is ap plied upon the under side of the handle at a suitable distance from its outer end, said guard being of a finger-piece or hook shape, facing forward to catch on the margin of the Vessel. in which the article is used, and so prevent the article from sliding or slippingwholly down into the contents of the vessel when left in the latter; also, to form a gripping device for the finger of the hand used in manipulat- 5o ing the article.

In Fig. 1 of the drawings the guard B is in the form of a plate-like hinged hook cast on or otherwise suitably affixed to the under side of the handle A, said guard closing up in front against the handle when not in use, as shown by dot-ted lines, and which will facilitate packing during transportation or storing away. Said guard is constructed so as to restrain it from closing backward.

In Figs. 2 and 3 the guard B is cast or otherwise attached in a swiveling manner, as by a pivot b, to the handle A, the swiveling motion being restricted, as by stops 0 c. This form of the guard allows for a proper amount or distance of play of the guard to accommodate itself to the acute angle made by the finger while holding the article to eat with.

Figs. 4 and 5 show a form of hinged guard B, analogous to that shown in Fig. 1, but of a cheaper, open,wire-like construction, attached by eyes formed by turned-over portions of stamped out portions of the metal of the handle.

Having thus described Inyinven tion, I claim 7 5 as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The co1nbination, with a handle, of a pivoted hook on the under side thereof, substantially as set forth.

2. In handles of spoons, forks, and other table or culinary and other articles, a hinged guard or hook applied to the under side of the handle in advance of the back or outer end of it and adapted to close in front up 85 against the handle. essentially as described.
