CAR-DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 433,212, dated July 29, 1890.

To aZl whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD L. PHIPPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Milford, county of Oakland, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Doors; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is. a side elevation of my car-door. Fig. 2 is a detail of the hanger. Fig. 3 shows a variation in the shape of the hanger.
In carrying out my invention, A represents the sides of the car, and B the door.
0 is a rod attached to the side of the car and extending above the door.
D are the angular or elbow hangers, the upper ends embracing the rod 0. These hangers extend down, and their lower ends are pivoted to the door by means of the arms I). These hangers are shaped as shown in Fig. 2, with a portion near the upper end projecting out at an angle, as shown at (Z. I11 this angled portion is the slot d, which is inclined or arranged at an angle to the vertical plane of the car-door.
E is a rod extending across the door near the upper end and movably engaged thereto by the strips or cleats F. The ends of this rod E enter the slots (Z in the hangers and are movable therein, Attached to this rod E near the outer ends are the rods G, which extend diagonally down toward the center of the door, where the lower ends are pivoted to the crank II.
I is an arm for revolving the crank ll.
The operation will be at once seen. The operator by throwing up the arm I raises the crank II, and thus forces the rods G and rod E upward. The ends of the rod E, being in the slots (1 of the hangers, bear against the face of the slots, and a leverage is thus exerted to throw the upper end of the door out from the frame. The lower end then can be pulled out with the hand and the door be slid along on the rod 0 until the doorway is clear. Vhen it is desired to shut the door, it may he slid back until it is opposite the doorway, and
then by throwing down the arm I the rod E, bearing on the other face of the slot in the hanger, operates to throw the door in against the frame. By bevelin g the edges of the door and the edges of the frame adjacent thereto a perfectly-tight joint is made between the two.
By this mechanism, as will be seen, the door may be readily and easily thrown in toward or out from the frame. If desired, the rod or bolt J may be provided on the lower edge of the door, and arms J extend therefrom up to and be engaged with the crank Il, so that the revolution of the crank to close the door operates to shoot the bolt J into the socket J on the sill, and thus lock the lower edge of the door until it is released by the throwing out of the upper edge.
It will of course be apparent that instead of the hanger being shaped as shown in Fig. 2 it might be shaped sothat the slot cl will be in a different position, as illustrated in Fig. 3. In this latter case a reverse movement of the rods G will be required to throw the doorthat is, when the hanger is shaped as in Fig. 2 the upward throw of the rod G operates to open the door; but if the slot were in the position shown in Fig. 3 a downward movement of the rods G would be required to open the door. I would of course be understood as including both forms of my invention.
If desired, the arm I may be provided with an eye 2 adapted to embrace a staple Z) on the door, and through this staple may be passed a padlock, seal, or other locking device.
\Vhat I claim is- 1. The combination, with a car-door and a suitable way above the same from which the door is suspended, of hangers D, having the lower ends pivoted to the door and their upper ends adapted to bear on the said way, and provided with inclined slots (1, arranged at an angle to the vertical plane of the car-door, the rod E, movably engaged on said door and having its ends entering said slots (1 in the hangers, and mechanism for moving said rod vertically, whereby the inclined walls of the slots act to throw the door toward or from the frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a car-door and rod extending above the same, and hangers embracing said rod and pivoted to said door, and provided with inclined slots cl, arranged ICO slots d, of mechanism for operating said door and locking the same, consisting of the rod E, rods G, crank H, bolt J, and arms J, substantially as described.
