BOOK ATTACHMENT.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 432,700, dated July 22, 1890.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, THORNTON F. GREGG,

a citizen of the United States,residing at the the right hand of the book for reference, so

that the one can be opened out without interfering with the other.

My invention relates to a device for attachin g an index, memorandum-book, or map, 650., to the inner surface of the back cover of a ledger or other account-book, a letter-press' copying book, or other book, whereby the index or other book or map is a complete and salable article of merchandise that can be attached by the purchaser to the book for which it is adapted, or by the manufacturer,

, or by the stationer selling the book.

My invention consists in an index or other book having a cover of heavy paper or similar material, the edge of one side of which cover is continued to form a flap or leaf corresponding about in size with one of the sides of said cover. The outer edge of the flapor leaf is bent over upon itself, and to the upper face of the folded edge is attached a separate strip, which projects slightly beyond said edge, and the adjacent faces of both the turned-over edge and the strip are surfaced with adhesive material.

i/Vhere the book is an index for a lettercopying book, I provide a strip of binders board along upon the surface of the strip beyond the folded edge of the flap or leaf, and this piece of binders board is of about the thickness of the index, so that in copying a letter an even thickness or bearing is provided almost to the back of the book.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a book with index attached according to my invention, and Fig. 2 is a cross-secti0n of the index or other book and the means for attachment.

The book is composed of the back a, front cover I), back cover 0, and leaves (Z, and is of usual construction.

I The index-book is composed of the leaves 6,

with lettered edges, as usual. The front and back covers ff are to be of heavy paper or similar material, and one edge of one of said covers (preferably the front) is continued as a flap or leaf g, and the outer edge portion of said flap or leaf is bent over at g upon itself in width about one-third of the flap g. To the upper face of this folded edge is attached a separate strip 7i, about one-half of the width of which strip h projects free beyond the aforesaid folded edge, and the adjacent faces 2 and i of both the turned-over portion g and strip h are surfaced with adhesive material. The strip it receives the direct strain in use.

2' represents a strip of binders board secured upon the upper surface of the freeedge of the strip h, and this strip 1' in thickness is about equal to the thickness of the indexbook, and is employed where the index is to be used in a letter-copying book, so as to give an even thickness back to the union of the leaves at the back of the book, and thus provide for making a uniform impression copy. The stripe of binders board is not necessary where the index is to be used with a ledger or other account-book, or where the article to be attached by my improvement to a book is a map or memorandum-book.

My improved attachment is secured to the inner face of the back cover near the back edge by moistening the gummed surfaces 2 and i and pressing them into contact with the surface of the cover.

The index or other book attached in place by my improvement is less liable to be torn away from its fastening when in use, because the strip 72, takes the direct strain when pulling the index from the book out flat for use and reference.

I claim as my invention- 1. The combination, with the index or similar book, of the cover of heavy paper or similar material, the flap or leaf 9, formed as a continuation of one cover, and having a turned over edge portion r, the strip h, in part attached to the upper face of the folded edge, and the adjacent faces of the portions g and strip h being surfaced with adhesive in ateria], substantially as specified.

2. The combination, With the index or similar book, of the cover of heavy paper or similar material, the flap or leaf g, formed as a continuation of one cover and having a turnedover edge portion g, the strip 71, attached to the upper face of the folded edge, and the adjacent faces of the portion g and strip h being surfaced with adhesive material, and the strip 2' of binders board secured to the upper face of the free edge of the strip h, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
