Description

(No Modl.)
W. WILSON. BRAKE FOR BABY UARRIAGES.
No. 429,709. Patented June 10, 1890.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WVILLIAM WILSON, OF MIDDLETOWVN, NEWV YORK.
BRAKE FOR BABY-CARRIAG ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 429,709, dated June 10, 1890.
Application filed January 11,1890. Serial No. 336,714. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, \VILLIAM WILSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Machine as a Brake for Baby-Carriages; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings making a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view; Fig. 2, a vertical section through lines 1 2 Fig. 3, a front view; Fig. 4c, a back view, all showing the brake when back wheels of carriage are.
locked. Fig. 5 is one-half of cross-bar, showin g grooves and slots when brake-lever O is re moved. Fig. 6 is an end view of Fig. 5 through lines 8 4, showing the grooved space for boltheads on front side and curved space to correspond with curved brackets G G on back side.
The cross-bar A A is joined together with the name-plate B, as shown in Fig. 4, and is provided with slots, as shown in Fig. 5, so as to be extended to a suitable length for any baby-carriage. The brake-shoe levers O O are pivoted to cross-bar A A at joints D D,
(see Fig. and so adjusted that brake-shoes E E can press on back wheels of carriage F F. The cross -bar A A is mounted upon curved brackets G .G, so that the cross-bar A A can be adjusted to the position of carriagehandle II and secured to the required position by bolts or screws. Brackets G G are mounted on lower part of carriage handle shafts I I and secured to the required position by clamps or ferrules, as shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4.. Clamps J J are mounted and secured to the upper part of carriage-handle shafts I I, to which brake-handle arms K K are pivoted and form a joint. The brakehandle arms K K are of a triangular shape, the bottom corner being pivoted to clamps J J the top corner having a hole or ferrule through which brake-handle L is connected, the back corner having the pivoted hook on m, as shown in Fig. 2. The brake-handle L, which is made of round wood, is made to pass through holes or ferrules in the top corner of brake-handle arms K K and connects right and left hand brakes together, also allowing the brake-handle arms K K to be adjusted to the required distance apart. The hooks m m, which are pivoted to the back corner of brake-handle arms K K, are connected to brake-shoe levers O C by springs or n and so adjusted that when brake-handle L is drawn close to carriage-handle H the springs 11 n will allow the hook m m to pass the center of the pivots or joints in clamps J J, the car'- riage-handle H acting as a stop to brake-handle L. By applying the pressure of springs 71 n to brake-shoes E E the back wheels of carriage F F will be locked, thereby securing the babycarriage from all danger of motion when left on a grade, and when brake-handle L is thrown over the pivots or joints in clamps J J, so as to rest on carriage-handle shafts I I, the weight of springs or n and brake-handle L raises the brake-shoes E E clear from carriage-wheels F F.
The brakes are operated by brake-handle L, which is parallel with carriage-handle II, and to put on brakes the brake-handle L is turned to rest on carriage-handle II.
To take brakes oil the brake-handle L is thrown over pivots or joints of clamps J J, so as to rest on carriage-handle shafts I I, and when going downgrade the brake-handle L is gently pressed toward carriage-handle II by the grip of the operators hand.
What I claim as my invention, and wish to secure by Letters Patent, is
1 The combination, on a brake for a babycarriage, of the brake-handle L, with its arms K K, pivoted to clamps J J, mounted upon carriage-handle shafts I I, said arms being provided with pivoted hooks m m, pivoted brake-levers O O, and springs or n, connecting said levers to the hooks m m, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a baby-carriage brake, the cross-bar A, composed of two grooved and slotted members held adjustably together by nameplate B, said bar being mounted on curved brackets G G, brake-levers O C, pivoted to said crossbar, and means for actuating the brake-levers, substantially as shown and described.
Signed at Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, this 9th day of January, A. D. 1890.
