UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SINOLAIR STUART, OF PLAINFIELD, NEV- JERSEY.
CONSTRUCTION OF SHIPS OR OTHER VESSELS..
SPECIFICATION forming part of' Letters Patent. No. 429,290, dated June 3, 1890.
Application filed April 5, 1890. Serial No. 346,752. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.:
Be it known that I, SINCLAIR STUART, of Plainiield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Ships and other Vessels, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to vessels constructed entirely of iron or of steel, and to what are known as composite vessels, constructed partly of iron and partly of steel or partly of iron or steel and partly of Wood.
Its object is to build sue-h vessels of great strength and to provide for the distribution of the strength of the different parts according to the requirements with a less Weight of material; and to this end `it consists in the novel constructions of the frames of suoli vessels, as hereinafter described and claimed.
Figure l represents a transverse section of parts of one side and of, the bottom of a vessel, and showing afront view of a frame illustrating my invention. Figs. 2 and l3 represent, on a larger scale than Fig. l, transverse sections of the frame, taken in the line @o oc of that figure, illustrating some differences of construction which are within the scope of my invention. Fig. 4 represents a transverse section on the same scale as Figs. 2 and 3 of the frame in the line y y of Fig. l. Fig. 5 represents a transverse section on the same scale as Figs.'2, 3, and 4 of the frame, taken in the line z z of Fig. l.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures.
A designatesa channel-iron arranged in the vvessel with its iianges a projecting in the direction ofthe length of the vessel. This channel-iron runs through the bottom, the bilge, and the sides of the vessel, as maybe seen by reference to Fig. l, and constitutes a main and reverse frame at the sides of the vessel, but a main frame only at the bottom.
B is a Hoor-plate running through the bottom of the vessel and up into the bilge, Where it is represented as terminating at b. This plate is riveted, as shown atv., to the web of the channel-iron frame A. The said plate may be of any depth that may be considered desirable, generally increasing in depth from the bilge toward the central keelson C ofthe vessel.
of the Hoor-frames and up to the top of the bilge, and the so-extended portion is riveted to the channel-iron A. These angle-irons constitute reverse frames in the bilge and bottom of the vessel. In some parts of the vessel I propose only to use one of these angle-'iron reverse frames, as shown in Fig. 2. In other parts Where greater strength is required, as under engines, the boilers, or thrustbearings for a screw-propeller, I should use two such frames, as shown in Fig. 3.
By the above-described combination of channel-iron main frame, angleiron reverse frame, and floor-plates I am enabled to give the vessel very great strength in proportion to the Weight of material employed.
lVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination, in the frame of a ship or other vessel, of a channel-iron which runs through the bottom, the bilge, and the sides of the vessel and constitutes a main and a reverse frame at the sides, but a main frame only at the bottom, a iioor-plate which runs through the bottom and up into the bilge and is riveted to said channel-iron, and an angleiron which is riveted both to the upper edge of the floor-plate and to the inner part of the channel-iron to form a reverse frame in. the bilge and bottom of the vessel, substantially as herein described.
2. The combination, in the frame of a ship or other vessel, of a channel-iron which runs through the bottom, the bilge, and the sides of the vessel and constitutes both a main and vreverse frame at the sides, but a main frame ioo
