Description

(No Model.)
J. P. HOWARD.
BANGLE- No. 428,339. Patented May 20,
INVENTOH: gfiv B I A TTOHNEYS UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
BANGLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 428,339, dated May 20, 1890.
Application filed March 5, 1890. Serial No. 342,721. (No model.)
To aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OSEPH P. HOWARD, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bangles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of amultiple bangle-that is, a bangle comprising in one several rings or bands to encircle the wrist which is so constructed in the method or means of uniting the several rings to each other that the bangle may be enlarged to facilitate putting it on and on, and when on the wrist will automatically close snugly thereto.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.
Figure 1 is a plan View of my new bangle, and Fig. 2 is an enlarged edge View of the same.
The bangle here shown comprises siX rings, two outside rings A A and four intermediate rings B, and is made of round springdrawn gold, silver, or other metal; but a less number of coils may be employed, and the wire may be of angular outline or other form in cross-section,if desired. One terminal of the bentto form a lateral loop a, facing the loop a or pointing in the opposite direction.
The
eye a loosely embraces the adjacent ring B just back of its loop I), the loop b loosely embraces the next ring just back of its loop, and so on throughout, the lateral loop of each em-' bracing the adjacent ring. The eye a loosely embraces the last intermediate ring'just in front of the lateral loop in the last intermediate ring. The loose arrangement of the said eyes and loops and the formation of the rings or coils of a continuous Wire adapts each ring to slide in its loop, so that the normal diameter of the bangle may be enlarged to facilitate the putting of it on or off over the hand, and by making it of spring-wire the bangle after being thus enlarged possesses sufficient energy to be self-recoverable to the extent of bringing the eyes and loops in contact, as shown in Fig. 2. \Vhen thus in contact, as last mentioned, the said eyes a0 and loops 1) form an ornamental braid across the top of the bangle.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 7 As a new article of manufacture, abangle comprising tWo outer rings and several intermediate rings, each intermediate ring being formed with a lateral loop loosely embracing the adjacent ring, and each outer ring being formed at each terminal of the Wire With a lateral eye loosely embracing an adjacent intermediate ring, substantially as described.
JOSEPH P. HOWARD. Vitnesses:
A. B. HOWARD, WV. ISAAOS.
